The German Reichsbahn began in 1920, a renumbering plan for uniform designation of the regional railways to develop acquired steam locomotives. The basis was a corresponding series scheme .
History of the redrawing plan
When the Reichseisenbahnen was founded on April 1, 1920, each of the seven German state railways (Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, Württemberg, Baden, Mecklenburg and Oldenburg - the Alsace-Lorraine state railway only existed until the end of the First World War) in Germany had its own regulations Identification of your locomotives. There were also differences in the numbering in the individual railway administrations. The labeling was not always designed for changes from the start, so there were still differences.
When the seven regional railways were merged to form a joint state railway , standardization of the marking became urgently necessary in order to enable central management of the inventory, which around 1920 consisted of around 400 classes with over 20,000 locomotives. There were both vehicles that only existed as individual pieces and vehicles with several thousand copies built.
The final solution to this problem took over 5 years and three different plans were developed under the direction of Gustav Hammer , President of the Reichsbahn Central Office . The actual re-drawing also took years, so that not all locomotives were given their new number because they have since been taken out of service.
The first preliminary re-drawing plan
The first redesignation plan from 1922 provided for different series numbers than the later plans. The steam locomotives, for example, were to be divided into 99 series according to their purpose and their wheel alignment . This draft was not completed because problems were expected in its practical implementation. In addition, the plan left too few opportunities to incorporate later technical changes and newly developed and built vehicles.
The second preliminary redrawing plan
The basic structure of the second, preliminary re-drawing plan from July 25, 1923 already corresponded to the final re-drawing plan from 1925. In this plan, space had been created for the planned new standard locomotives. The 99 existing numbers for the steam locomotives were arranged according to the following criteria:
01-19: Express locomotives
20–39: Passenger locomotives
40–59: Freight locomotives
60–79: Passenger train tank locomotives
80–96: Freight train tank locomotives
97: Rack railway locomotives
98: (standard gauge) local train locomotives
99: Narrow gauge locomotives
The third final redrawing plan
The third, final re-drawing plan from 1925 differed from the previous one essentially in that all locomotives that had been decommissioned up to then - and thus entire series - were deleted; In addition, individual errors in the assignment have been fixed.
With the exception of the Bavarian types, the locomotives built from 1923 onwards were delivered with the new company number . The actual redesign of older locomotives did not take place until 1926.
Locomotives that were classified as obsolete from the point of view of the time and were therefore soon to be taken out of service were given serial numbers from 7001 after the series number.
Express locomotives
The series numbers 01 to 11 were reserved for series of express train locomotives to be newly developed or under development from 1920; Locomotives from the stock of the state railways that had to be redrawn were given the series numbers 12 to 19.
