The vehicles of type II a of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways were express train steam locomotives .
The vehicles were specially made for the international trains that crossed Baden . They should replace the Crampton locomotives previously used for this purpose. The locomotives developed from class III were equipped with a Belpaire boiler, a sheet metal outer frame, Hall cranks and an external Stephenson control . The bogie had a short wheelbase of 1,440 mm and was arranged between the cylinders and the driving axle, so that the cylinders were part of the overhanging masses. The running characteristics of the locomotives therefore left a lot to be desired. The vehicles were equipped with type 3 T 11.5 tenders .
Test drives performed well. A 150 t train was pulled at 50 km / h on a gradient of 12.5 per thousand and a speed of 84 km / h was reached with 220 t (16 cars) on a flat stretch.
Despite these results and a sufficiently large boiler, the engine turned out to be too weak. With the extension of the boiler tubes and a larger cylinder diameter, this problem has largely been eliminated.
Ten vehicles were planned for the Deutsche Reichsbahn . According to the 1923 redesignation plan, they were to be redrawn as class 36.73. Numbers 36 7301 to 36 7303, 36 7311 to 36 7314 and 36 7321 to 36 7323 were planned. There was no definitive redrawing because they were retired by 1925.
