The locomotives of the class T 4 I were wet steam tank locomotives of the Palatinate Railways , which were transferred from 1906 to the Royal Bavarian State Railways as the management on the left bank of the Rhine. Krauss delivered four copies in 1895 and three more in 1897, which had been developed on the basis of the second series of the Bavarian D VIII. They differed from these only in a few measures; so were z. B. the diameter of the running and coupling wheels is smaller. They also had a larger coal container. They were stationed in the Neustadt depot .
In 1908 and 1910 Krauss delivered four more locomotives each, which were now designated as D VIII . They differed in their larger storage tanks and a maximum permissible boiler pressure increased from 12 to 13 bar.
The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over all 15 locomotives in 1925 and assigned them to the 98.6 class together with the Bavarian D VIII . The first seven vehicles were given the numbers 98 651-657 and the eight newer ones the numbers 98 681-688. The first group was taken out of service by 1940, the second still came to the Deutsche Bundesbahn . With the 98 682 and 98 686, the last two copies were retired in 1950.
The Augsburg Local Railway bought the 98 683 in 1949 and used it with the number 10 until 1957.
