List of Baden locomotives and railcars
This list contains an overview of the locomotives of the Grand Ducal Badische Staatsbahn .
The state railroad owned a total of 1681 locomotives between 1840 and 1920. The highest number was recorded around 1920 with 915 locomotives. 620 were redrawn in 1925 according to the series scheme of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .
Designation scheme
At the Grand Ducal Badische Staatsbahn, the locomotives were classified according to type and given a track number and a name. The names given came from the animal kingdom, geography (rivers, mountains, cities) and people. Since the choice of a name became more and more difficult with continuous procurement, the locomotive with the number 218 procured in 1868 was not given a name. In 1882 all name tags were removed.
The course numbers were assigned consecutively. If locomotives were decommissioned, the numbers that became available were assigned to the next new locomotives. Until 1882 the name was also taken over. In 1872 an attempt was made to arrange the number sequence of the locomotives within the classes. The track numbers were exchanged while keeping the names. Since the practical use was limited, this order was abandoned five years later. From the 1880s onwards, the state railroad tried again to sort out the track numbers. First, shunting locomotives were given numbers from 500. When this threshold was reached by the normal vehicle fleet, the locomotives were given 600 numbers and later another 1000 higher numbers.
In contrast to other railways, generic names were introduced from the start of operation. A new category number was assigned for each new construction lot. The genres I to XIV were created by 1868. In 1868 a new system was introduced. Locomotives with the same characteristics or requirements were grouped together.

The locomotives previously classified in the old scheme have been transferred accordingly to the new classes. To make it easier to differentiate between them, the old generic names are in italics below .

With additional lower case letters “a” to “h”, different types of construction were identified within a genus. In addition, each delivery series was marked with a superscript index.
The VIb 10 is the tenth delivery of class VIb passenger train tender locomotives.
Steam locomotives
Generic names valid before 1868 are set in italics in the tables to make them easier to distinguish .
Broad gauge locomotives of the early days for all types of trains
These locomotives were originally built for the Baden broad gauge of 1600 mm and were largely converted to standard gauge when the gauge was changed in 1854 . None of the locomotives was redrawn to an operating number of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .
