The machines of type X b , from 1868 VII b, were freight locomotives of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways .

In 1863 these freight locomotives were procured to meet the increased demand in freight transport. The design was based on the eight years older X a , but strengthened the boiler and engine. A higher performance was achieved mainly through larger cylinders and a higher boiler pressure. Compared to its predecessor, the boiler was 190 mm higher, giving the locomotive a different look.

The locomotives were used from Freiburg im Breisgau , especially on the route to Mannheim. From 1886 to 1891 it was retired from active operational service. Some of the written off locomotives (with a company number increased by 1000) were still used for less service until 1897.

Constructive features

The locomotives had a single fork frame with 21 mm thick internal fork plates. The Crampton cauldron had a tall dome over the fire box. The two-cylinder wet steam engine was arranged horizontally on the outside. The forked connecting rods acted on the central coupling axle. The two front axles were suspended directly on the storage boxes via leaf springs within the frame forks. On the rear axle, the leaf spring was attached to a traverse over the wheels.
