Mellor is a civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport , Greater Manchester , England . It is located between Marple Bridge and New Mills on a tributary of the River Goyt .

geography

Mellor lies in the foothills of the Pennines bordering the High Peak District . The local church of Mellor Church and Mellor Hall are on a hill, which is separated from the rest of the parish by a small valley.

Mellor sits on a sandstone layer of the Peak District National Park , also known as Dark Peak , in contrast to the limestone of the White Peak region. Both layers belong to the Carbon Age. A special feature in Mellor is the lack of iodine , which is also not found in the River Goyt . This deficiency used to lead to an enlargement of the thyroid gland known as the goiter or "Derbyshire Neck".

history

The history of Mellor can be traced back to the Anglo-Saxons in the Middle Ages. The church was built around 1330 and houses the oldest pulpit in Britain .

During the industrialization , the Roman Lakes were created on the other side of the River Goyt , which was a water reservoir for Samuel Oldknows cotton mill (also called Mellor Mill ). At the height of industrialization, water power was replaced by coal and the coal seams discovered in Mellor were used to fire the ovens.

Mellor belonged to the county of Derbyshire until 1936 , after which it came to the city district of Marple and was thus part of Cheshire . With the formation of Greater Manchester in 1974, Mellor became part of the administrative district of the city of Stockport (Metropolitan Borough of Stockport).

politics

Traditionally strong parties in Mellor are the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats . Even if there is hardly any politics in Mellor, there is still a high turnout in every election .
