List of locomotives in Alsace-Lorraine 1871–1938

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list shows the locomotives of the Reichseisenbahnen in Alsace-Lorraine (EL) and the Réseau ferroviaire d'Alsace-Lorraine (AL).

Designation of the locomotives

The Reichseisenbahnen in Alsace-Lorraine numbered the locomotives consecutively and gave them names. The names were assigned according to the type of construction.

In addition, the locomotive fleet was divided into rows from the start. It was based on the scheme of the Bavarian State Railway with capital letters and subsequent Arabic numerals.

  • A - express and passenger locomotives (names of rivers)
  • B - locomotives for mixed service (names of rivers)
  • C - freight locomotives (names of cities and municipalities)
  • D - tank locomotives (names of persons, first names)
  • E - narrow gauge locomotives (no names)

A series number was assigned for each delivery series.

In 1906 all vehicles were renumbered and a new class system was introduced. This time they oriented themselves towards the Prussian system . A certain range of numbers was assigned to the individual types.

  • S - express train locomotives (numbers 1–500)
  • P - passenger locomotives (numbers 501–1000)
  • G - freight locomotives (numbers 1001-2000)
  • T - tank locomotives (numbers 2001–2600)

In 1912 the locomotives were given new numbers and in some cases the designation was changed. The locomotive names were also removed.

  • S - express train locomotives (numbers 1–2000)
  • P - passenger locomotives (numbers 2001-3000)
  • G - freight locomotives (numbers 3001-6000)
  • T - freight locomotives (numbers 6001-9000)

Narrow gauge locomotives were given the type T and the number range 3001–3042. Duplicate number assignments were accepted. Older locomotives were no longer renumbered and kept their number until they were retired.

In 1919 the French state railway "Réseau ferroviaire d'Alsace-Lorraine" (AL) took over the system and continued to run it until 1938, when the company became part of the SNCF .
