With the S 7 the Prussian State Railways designated four different types of express train locomotives with the axle arrangement 2'B1 '( Atlantic ) and four-cylinder compound engine.

Types de Glehn

The S 7 of the de Glehn type was built in three different versions, which differed mainly in that the firebox was relatively long and pulled in between the wheels on one and was wider on the other two and lay completely behind the drive wheels. In the former design the bogie had an outer frame, in the other two an inner frame.

The first design in particular, like many vehicles from the Grafenstaden engineering factory, looked very similar to the French locomotives.

The Prussian State Railways purchased a total of 79 vehicles of this type between 1902 and 1904. None of the locomotives were taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

The vehicles received tenders of the type 2'2 'T 21.5.

Borries type

S 7 of the Borries type, built by Hanomag

In the Borries type S 7 , the cylinders were located between the axles of the bogie and acted together on the first coupling axle. The frame was a combination of sheet metal and bar frames. The circuit was relatively far below, and the drive wheels were covered by a common wheel protection box.

The machines of this type were particularly impressive at high speeds. During test drives in comparison to the 2'B2 'test locomotives of the type Prussian S 9 Altona 561 and Altona 562 , an S 7 reached 136 km / h. A later test run even reached 143 km / h, making the locomotives the second fastest German Atlantic design just behind the Badische IId .

Despite these successes, no locomotive of this type was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn; like all "Atlantics" they had too little pulling power compared to their performance.

One focus of the operation was the Hanover Directorate with the Berlin – Hanover – Dortmund route.

A total of 159 locomotives of this type were built by Hanomag and Linke-Hofmann between 1902 and 1907 . After the First World War , some locomotives had to be handed over to France, Belgium and Poland. The rest was partly used in passenger train service until the early twenties.

The vehicles were given as the types de Glehn Schlepptender the type 2'2 'T 21.5.
