The Alsace-Lorraine S 3 was an express train steam locomotive of the Reichseisenbahnen in Alsace-Lorraine in composite construction with the axle formula 2'B. It largely corresponded to the Prussian S 3 , which had proven itself well. The locomotives were delivered in 1900 and 1901 by the Elsässische Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Grafenstaden as A 15 series (6 units) and by six other German locomotive factories as A 16 (35 units). In 1906 they were given the designation S 2 23 - 57 and from 1912 S 3 201 - 240 .
The A 16 No. 782 was delivered in a superheated steam version and was given the number S 4 401 in 1912 . It was retired in 1921.
After it no longer met the increased performance requirements, the S 3 was retired from the Réseau ferroviaire d'Alsace-Lorraine (AL) until 1925.
