The two locomotives of the series A 1 acquired the kingdom railways in Alsace-Lorraine 1871. The steam locomotives had to 1904 in use.
With the takeover of the route network in Alsace-Lorraine, the acquisition of locomotives and wagons was necessary because the French had withdrawn all vehicles. The two locomotives in the A1 series were acquired in 1871 by the Carels Frères locomotive factory in Ghent, Belgium. Similar locomotives had been built for the Belgian state railway Chemins de fer de l 'État Belge . The two machines for the Reichseisenbahnen were originally intended for the Belgian railways and were to be given the numbers 145 and 146. The locomotives of the Reichseisenbahnen were given the numbers 1 and 2 and the names PREGEL and WARTHE .
They were only used briefly in express train services. The performance of the locomotives did not meet the requirements. The trains could not be moved at the desired speed. The locomotives were therefore only used in normal passenger traffic from 1872. They were retired between 1900 and 1904.
Constructive features
The locomotives had an outer frame. The steam dome sat on the front boiler section. Safety valves were located on the steam dome and the standing boiler. The two-cylinder wet steam engine was internal. The controls were also within the frame.
The suspension was provided by leaf spring packages lying on the frame above the axles. A compensation lever was installed between the leading axle and the first coupling axle.
The cab was closed. The chimney was provided with a sloping attachment. The sand dome was located behind the steam dome and acted on the first coupling axis.
