Series scheme 1861–1864

After the founding of the Südbahngesellschaft (SB) in 1859 and the takeover of the locomotive stock of the Southern State Railway , the Kaiser Franz Joseph-Orientbahn and the Tyrolean State Railway , it was necessary to bring order to the existing locomotives. In 1861, the first series scheme of the SB was introduced, with the SB using the term series instead of the series that is common today. Only locomotives with two or more powered axles have been included in this scheme. Locomotives with only one driven axle, as well as some B-couplers that had been converted from uncoupled machines, and the Semmering competition locomotives received new numbers, but no series designation, as it was assumed that these would soon be retired. In general, the numbers were assigned regardless of the numbers assigned by the Southern State Railroad, from which the majority of the locomotives came.

Within the series scheme, the doubly coupled locomotives were given series numbers from 1 to 17, and the three-coupled machines were given series numbers 18 to 28. As a result, the Engerth locomotives , of which there were doubly and triple-coupled locomotives , were numbered separately. The only two quadruple coupled locomotives were designated as series 29. The two machines were handed over to the Venetian network as early as 1863.

In summary, the first row scheme of the SB brought a certain order to the locomotive stand, but it was not very flexible with regard to future recordings of new rows. Therefore it was necessary to introduce a new scheme as early as 1864.

Series scheme from 1864

When locomotives from the Lombardy-Venetian network were added to the Southern Railway Company (SB), the row scheme from 1861 was no longer suitable because of its inflexibility. In 1864 the second series scheme of the SB came into force.

This time locomotives with only one driven axle were also included. These were assigned the row numbers 1 to 3. Double-coupled machines were assigned row numbers 4 to 19, triple-coupled machines were assigned row numbers 20 to 32, and quad-coupled machines were assigned row numbers 33 to 35. The separation of the Engerth locomotives according to the serial numbers was thereby prolonged.

The political events (establishment of the Kingdom of Italy and loss of the Lombard and Venetian routes) led to the fact that several row numbers were emptied and could thus be filled again. In any case, the new scheme was too inflexible if new series were to be added. As a result, the SB used letters (e.g. Serie 32d) and indices (e.g. Serie 32d 1 ) to denote the new series of locomotives.

From 1898 the SB used the kkStB series scheme , but without changing the existing series numbers of its own scheme.

Self-service locomotives based on the kkStB scheme

From 1898, the Südbahngesellschaft (SB) used the kkStB series scheme to designate all newly acquired locomotive types. This was true both when the SB procured locomotives, of which the kkStB already had some in its inventory, as well as with new developments initiated by the SB. Sometimes the kkStB also took over such locomotives for its locomotive park, although it did not change the series designation (see e.g. series SB 629 ).
