The kk Südliche Staatsbahn (SStB) was an Austro-Hungarian railway company which, among other things, established the continuous rail link Vienna - Trieste in 1857 . The SStB network comprised the Gloggnitz - Mürzzuschlag - Graz - Marburg - Cilli - Laibach - Trieste route .

At the beginning, the Vienna-Raaber Bahn operated for the SStB. From May 1, 1851, the SStB took over the operation on its own. The first section Mürzzuschlag – Graz was opened on October 21, 1844, the Semmering Railway (Gloggnitz – Mürzzuschlag) on ​​July 17, 1854. With the completion of the last section Laibach – Trieste on July 27, 1857, the continuous connection Vienna – Trieste was established.

On September 23, 1858, the SStB was sold to the Südbahngesellschaft (privatization), which finally merged the Vienna – Trieste route into a huge railway network.
