The steam locomotive "NEUSTADT" was a freight train steam locomotive of the Imperial and Royal Southern State Railways . The locomotive was built by the Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik (Günther) on the occasion of the Semmering competition in 1851 . The other three vehicles that took part in this competition for the right locomotive for the Semmering Railway were the " BAVARIA ", the " SERAING " and the " VINDOBONA ".

The name “WR. NEUSTADT ”for this locomotive in literature. However, this name cannot be found in any list. See the remarks by Erich Hoch in ( Lit .: Dietrich, 1994, p. 307).

The "NEUSTADT" had four axles and four cylinders , two of which were stored in a bogie . It had a simple, relatively long cauldron . The cylinders were outside the frame . Water and coal were housed on the machine itself. So it was a tank locomotive , as there was no separate tender .

In the performance tests carried out in the course of the competition, the locomotive fulfilled the prescribed performance, but was behind the "BAVARIA" in second place. It was bought by the state at a price of 10,000 ducats .

The steam extraction from the boiler was perfect. However, due to the cylinders mounted on the bogies and the fixed boiler, articulated steam lines were required, which were difficult to maintain. In addition, the bogies were poorly designed, so that they could not move freely in the curves.

Nevertheless, the "NEUSTADT" was the model for the Meyer system double locomotives built in the late 1860s . The mallet locomotives can also be traced back to the “NEUSTADT” and the “ SERAING ”. In addition, the "NEUSTADT" was the first tank locomotive built in Austria .

Because of the defects mentioned, the machine was soon shut down and finally scrapped.
