The locomotives SKGLB 1-2 were narrow gauge - steam locomotives of SKGLB Museum (SKGLB) with a track width of 760 mm ( Bosnian gauge ). Four identical locomotives were procured by the Styrian State Railways (StLB) for the Preding-Wieseldorf – Stainz local line and for the Pöltschach – Gonobitz line ( Poljčane - Slovenske Konjice - Zreče ).

The SKGLB machines were delivered by Krauss in Linz in 1890 and the StLB locomotives in 1892 . They were the smallest steam locomotives used in public transport on Austrian narrow-gauge railways. The StLB machines were given the names MERANO , STAINZ , GONOBITZ and HOLY SPIRIT .

The STAINZ gained great popularity due to its wide distribution in the model and thus became one of the most famous steam locomotives in Europe.

The two locomotives of the Salzkammergut local railway have already been purchased for the construction of the first section from Bad Ischl to Strobl . Locomotive 1 was drafted for war purposes during the First World War and remained in Romania, locomotive 2 was in service on the SKGLB until 1953. Neither of the two locomotives has survived.

The StLB used two copies each on the Preding-Wieseldorf-Stainz local railway and on the Pöltschach-Gonobitz local railway in Lower Styria .

The STAINZ remained of the deployment in the 50s, first as a emergency reserve, 1967, she was in the operating workshop of StLB in Weiz undergone major repairs, and numerous modifications were made. The side water tanks were lengthened to the front and the driver's cab was enlarged, and it also received a superheater and a second set of the most important controls on the heater side of the driver's cab, since it was to be used for amateur engine driver courses on the Murtalbahn from 1969 . In this function it remained in operation on the Murtalbahn until 2000, where it was placed in Murau after the boiler deadline . Recommissioning is not planned for the time being for economic reasons, since the two other available steam locomotives on the Murtalbahn cover the demand for tourist and hobby trains. The externally well-maintained locomotive can, however, be viewed on special occasions (station festivals, etc.).

On delivery it had a normal chimney, the Kobel chimney was added later. The cab rear wall was originally straight. The water tank was initially only in the frame until the additional containers were attached to the side of the boiler.

The STAINZ in a model

LGB

When in 1968 the toy manufacturer Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk was planning to bring a model railway based on a narrow-gauge model in nominal size IIm onto the market, the choice fell on the STAINZ for the first locomotive . The prototype seemed ideal for this project, the small locomotive exuded exactly the “charm of the good old steam locomotive era”, which quickly made the train known as a popular toy outside the circles of “serious” model railroaders. It could be sold in large numbers with the initial packs and laid the foundation stone for the Lehmann-Groß-Bahn .

The model railway manufacturer Fleischmann also chose the STAINZ as a model for its Magic Train steam locomotive in nominal size 0e .

Minitrains

Not quite to scale, but with good driving characteristics, Minitrains offers the model in H0e.
