The Ljubljana Railway Museum

The owned by the Slovenian Railways situated Railway Museum Ljubljana (železniški muzej Slovenskih železnic) is the National Railway Museum for Slovenia . It is located near the former Ljubljana- Šiška train station .

history

The need to document the history of the Slovenian railways became increasingly clear in the 1960s when it became foreseeable that the era of steam locomotives was coming to an end. Initially, the museum was housed in the former locomotive shed in Ljubljana-Šiška.

In 1996, on the 150th anniversary of the Slovenian railways, the most important exhibits were presented to the public. Railway historian and author Mladen Bogić was appointed director of the museum .

The most important pieces of the railway are its vehicles (also called " rolling stock "), especially the steam locomotives. The museum therefore shows 60 steam locomotives and 50 other rail vehicles. The oldest locomotive is the former Südbahn locomotive No. 29.718 (a sister locomotive of GKB 671 ), which was built in 1861; the smallest is locomotive K3 ex "Gonobitz", built in 1892 for the narrow-gauge local railway Pöltschach - Gonobitz (Poljčane - Slovenske Konjice - Zreče) (a sister locomotive, originally built for the Stainzerbahn , is located at the Murtalbahn ).

In addition to the rolling stock, the maps on display show the development of the Slovenian railways. Uniforms give an impression of how the railway staff were dressed. In addition, many smaller utensils from everyday railroad life are shown.

The collection shows the technical aids required for the safe operation of the railway, such as telegraphs, teleprinters, telephones, radios and signal box levers from various Slovenian signal boxes. Electromechanical signal systems and safety devices became common around 1900. Later the points were also set using electrically operated routes. Draisines were a time-saving aid for railway workers to get to their locations. Historical facilities for thermite welding as well as a collection of different sleepers made of wood, concrete and steel complete the collection.
