The steam locomotive "SERAING" was a freight locomotive of the Imperial and Royal Southern State Railways . It was built by the Cockerill locomotive factory in Seraing ( Belgium ) on the occasion of the Semmering competition in 1851 . The other three locomotives that took part in this competition for the right locomotive for the Semmering Railway were the “ BAVARIA ”, the “ NEUSTADT ” and the “ VINDOBONA ”.

The "SERAING" had four axles and four cylinders , two of which were stored in a bogie. The kettle actually consisted of two kettles butting together with their backs, so it had two separate fire boxes, two systems of boiler pipes and two chimneys. The cylinders were inside the frame. Water tanks were arranged along the boiler; the coal was carried on a small two-axle tender.

In the performance tests carried out in the course of the competition, the locomotive met the prescribed performance parameters, but ended up in third place. It was bought by the state for 9,000 ducats.

However, the boiler did not allow sufficient dry steam to be extracted. The mobility of the underframes caused joints in the steam lines that could not be kept tight in the long term.

Because of the above-mentioned defects, the machine was soon shut down and eventually scrapped. However, their design principle lived on in the Fairlie locomotives .
