history

The factory was in 1839 by the Vienna-Raab railway between the Vienna South and East Station built and mostly equipped with machines from England came. The first locomotives and wagons were built in 1840 based on the American model. These were also the first railway vehicles manufactured in Austria. The manufacture of the vehicles was difficult because there was no iron foundry in Austria at that time and the workers had no training in this regard either.

The first director of the factory, John Haswell , who was in charge from 1840 to 1882, had a major influence on the development of locomotive construction in Austria .

In 1855 the factory became the property of the priv. Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company ( StEG ) ( kk state-authorized machine factory in Vienna of the privileged Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company ), which had the factory enlarged.

The pioneering locomotives that left this factory include the continent's first triple-coupled locomotive, the FAHRAFELD , the Semmering competition machine VINDOBONA and the first quadruple-coupled locomotive, WIEN-RAAB .

The company operated a branch in what is now Reșița, Romania , the main task of which was the manufacture of railroad tracks and switches. Locomotive production there was only of secondary importance, however, until 1918 just 7 steam locomotives were produced.

Due to the consequences of the First World War , there was only a small sale of locomotives within the shrunken Austrian territory. This could be compensated for a while by foreign orders, but the factory had to close its doors in 1930. Vienna Central Station is now located on the site of the factory .
