John Haswell (born March 20, 1812 in Lancefield, Glasgow , Scotland , Great Britain , † June 8, 1897 in Vienna ) was an engineer and locomotive designer.

John Haswell studied at the Andersonian University in Glasgow and worked with 22 years in the shipbuilding office of William Fairbairn & Co .

In 1837, at the instigation of Matthias Schönerer , who was also heavily involved in the Budweis-Linz-Gmunden horse-drawn railway , he drafted the plans for the repair workshop of the Vienna-Raaber Bahn (later the StEG locomotive factory ) and in 1839, at the side of the mechanic Kraft , helped entrusted with the execution of these plans. When the workshop was completed, he independently took over its management and, in addition to repair work, immediately introduced the construction of new rolling stock.

Haswell resigned in 1882.

He rests in an honorary grave in the Döblinger Friedhof (group 10, number 1) in Vienna. In 1936, Hasswellgasse in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him.
