List of Swedish State Railways (SJ) locomotives and multiple units

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of locomotives and railcars of the Swedish State Railways is intended to give an overview of the locomotives used and their designation system.

As with many other railways, the first locomotives bought or built were given a name. This meant that each individual locomotive was run as its "own series".

As a result of the general nationalization of the railways in Sweden , countless individual locomotives from private railways were included in the numbering system, some as substructures, so that this list is hardly complete.

Designation system ("Litterasystemet")

As an example: the F 1200 shield

Since 1876 the Swedish State Railways used a designation made up of a capital letter (Littera) and the company number. With a few exceptions, each capital letter corresponded to a specific design. Sub-types were marked with lower case letters or numbers. All letters from A to Ä were used, and those that became vacant were assigned to new locomotive types (as an example: SJ A (I) = A (1863), first occupation - Swedish: första, SJ A (II) = A (1906), second line-up - Swedish: andra). Conversions resulted in numerous types of substructures, which were marked with lowercase letters or numbers. For example, the series SJ A (II) became various locomotives through conversions to the SJ A2 , some of them to the SJ A3 and some to the SJ A (III) , so that the assignment is not very easy to understand in some cases.

Narrow gauge locomotives are marked with p ( Swedish pytteliten = very narrow) for 891 mm and with t ( Swedish tiosextiosju = 1067) for 1067 mm gauge.

Some locomotives taken over from private railways were given their own names:

  • HSa to HSd came from Härnösand-Sollefteå Järnväg .
  • OKa to OKf came from the Ostkustbana .
  • ÖCBa and ÖCBb came from Östra Centralbana .

From 1886 on, numerous type changes were made with the aim of abolishing the exceptions in the system "upper case = type" and "lower case = sub-type". That goal was never achieved.
