The Ra or Rapid was an electric locomotive operated by the Swedish State Railways (SJ) . A total of ten pieces were manufactured by Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget . The Ra were used as express train locomotives and were in service until the 1990s.

history

As early as the 1940s it became clear that the SJ needed faster locomotives for their express trains . Therefore, two electric bogie locomotives were ordered from ASEA in 1953 . Like the NoHAB AA16, the design of the machines was inspired by North American locomotives, especially the design of the driver's cabs with their rounded stems (“bulldog noses”). The locomotives were painted orange and had a blue trim. This made them stand out from the rest of the Swedish electric locomotives, which were painted brown at the time.

As the two machines delivered in 1955 proved their worth, SJ ordered another eight of the same type from ASEA, which were delivered in 1961. Later, all ten vehicles were modernized and given an orange and white paint scheme based on the Rc series, as well as smaller Marschal headlights. Although the regular maximum speed on Swedish lines was only 130 km / h in the 1950s, the Ra series locomotives were designed for a top speed of 150 km / h. They were mainly used on the Stockholm – Gothenburg and Stockholm – Oslo lines . From around 1970 the Ra locomotives were gradually displaced from high-quality service by Rc machines and from then on they mainly carried regional trains in the Mälardalen and Bergslagen areas .

At SJ , the locomotives were decommissioned between 1987 and 1996.

Some Ra have been preserved in railway museums or railway associations:

  • Ra 846 was taken over by the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle in 1987 and restored to its delivery condition. It is used in museum operations.
  • Ra 847 has been with the Bergslagernas Järnvägssällskap museum association in Gothenburg since 1989 .
  • Ra 987 was taken over by the Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum in 1996 and loaned to the Nässjö Järnvägsmuseum in 1997 . In 2012 the locomotive was bought by the Nässjö Järnvägsmuseum.
  • Ra 994 has been with Stockholms Kultursällskap för Ånga och Järnväg since 1988 .

STAB Ra

Ra 988 was taken over by Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum in 1997 and bought by Svensk Tågkraft AB (STAB) in 2011 . As the STAB Ra 988 (91 74 1000 988-5) it is used with special services.
