Kalmar Verkstad
Kalmar Verkstad AB ( KVAB ) was a Swedish manufacturer of automobiles and rail vehicles . The company was dissolved in 2005.
history
As early as 1874 there was a first workshop in Kalmar for the trains of Kalmar Järnväg , which operated between Kalmar and Emmaboda . Kalmar Verkstadsaktiebolag (KVAB) was founded in 1902 as a joint repair and new construction workshop for the railway companies Kalmar Järnväg (KJ), Nybro – Sävsjöström Järnväg (NSJ), Föreningen för Kalmar läns östra järnvägs byggand (formerly Kalmar – Berga Torsås ) and Kalmar – Berga Järnväg., KB Järnväg (KTsJ) founded. The city of Kalmar was also involved in the company.
First, KVAB rented a track in the former KJ car workshop. In 1904 the company set up its own premises. The workshop began in 1905 with the production of passenger and freight cars as well as locomotives and later railcars . In 1906 the company delivered 74 wagons . During a reorganization in 1917, most of the private railways in southern Sweden took part in the company. In the following years, the tasks for Sävsjöström-Nässjö Järnväg (SäNJ), Mönsterås – Åseda Järnvägsaktiebolag and Mönsterås nya Järnvägsaktiebolag (MÅJ) and Karlskrona – Växjö Järnväg (CWJ) were taken over.
After the general nationalization of the railways , KVAB concentrated on the production of small locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, diesel locomotives and railcars for Statens Järnvägar , and gasoline-powered trams and locomotives were also built. These include the T44 series diesel locomotives and the Y1 series railcars . Exports went to Turkey , China and other countries. In recent years the SJ X2 , the Bombardier Regina and the X31K and X32K series have made up the production range for Öresundståg .
KVAB was taken over by Bombardier Transportation in 2001 . The vehicle construction existed until December 2005 when the last car left the factory. At that time, the owner company had relocated all manufacturing activities to other countries in Europe.
Automobiles
In 1967 the production of automobiles started. After about 2000 copies were made, production was stopped in 1972.
The only car model was the Tjorven . The large-capacity vehicle equipped with two side sliding doors was initially only available as a delivery van , from 1969 also as a station wagon . The vehicle was based on the chassis of the DAF 44 and was powered by a 40 HP engine from DAF . The Variomatic from DAF was used as the transmission .
