The T44 series is a Swedish diesel locomotive that is mainly used in freight train operations. It is also used in handover traffic and shunting operations. The locomotive originally built for Statens Järnvägar (SJ) is the largest diesel locomotive ever built in Sweden.

Use in Sweden

The majority of them are now owned by the state-owned freight company Green Cargo , which, along with other private companies, is responsible for freight train operations in Sweden. The locomotives are diesel-electric powered. The 12-cylinder V-two-stroke diesel GM EMD 12-645E from General Motors is used to generate electricity for the electric motors . With multiple controls, up to three locomotives can be operated.

Although intended for freight trains, they occasionally ran scheduled passenger trains, for example in the 1970s on the then non-electrified route between Borlänge and Mora and in the 1990s on the inland railway .

Other locomotives are or were used by TGOJ Trafik , the ore railway company MTAS and Norges Statsbaner (NSB). Some copies were also exported to Israel. Since 2014 a few locomotives have been sold to “private” Swedish railway companies. The locomotives are stationed from Trelleborg in the south to Kiruna in the north.

Some of the locomotives are equipped with radio remote control for one-man operation and received the internal designation T44R (R for Swedish radiostyrning = remote control).

GC Td

Due to the age of the locomotives, Green Cargo decided in 2007 to modernize 100 locomotives in order to extend their service life. In February 2009, the T44 371 was converted as a prototype at Bombardier Transportation in Randers in Denmark and became the Td 317. The T44 409 was converted in 2010, it is now listed as the Td 409. The two-stroke engine is replaced by a four-stroke engine with lower fuel consumption and lower emissions . After the modernization, the locomotives can be operated in addition to the multiple control with locomotives of the same type with the locomotives of the Rc and Bombardier TRAXX families. They are also being prepared for the installation of the ERTMS train protection system . 53 locomotives had been converted by May 2012. At the end of 2012, all 62 planned vehicles had been converted.

After the conversion, the locomotives were given the class designation GC Td.

Use in Norway

NSB Tue 7

In 1993 T44 276 was sold to NSB . In Norway it was given the series designation Di 7 with the serial number 634 in the Norwegian numbering system. The machine was only in use for three years and was then sold to Malmtrafik AB . There it was given the consecutive number 6.

Lent locomotives

In the 1990s, SJ lent twelve locomotives to NSB: T44 262, 264, 265, 270, 274, 275, 278, 280, 282, 314, 315 and 323. They were all used in the Trondheim region. With the exception of T44 278 , which was sold to TGOJ Trafik in 2000, it was returned in 2001. In 2010, the T44 278 was bought back and has since been in use again for GC.

Other uses

As far as Green Cargo is active in Norway, T44s are used there, such as in the shunting service in Oslo-Alnabru or since 2016 in the route service on the Raumabane .
