The Rättvik – Borlänge railway is a standard-gauge railway in Sweden . The line was built in several stages by private railway companies .

The first plans for a railway to the Siljan existed as early as 1850. Falun was connected to the network in 1859 by the Gävle-Dala Järnväg (GDJ). Twenty years later, Bergslagernas Järnvägarsaktiebolaget built its main line between Gothenburg and Falun. Both railway companies had considered a branch line to Siljan, but it was not built.

Siljans Järnvägsaktiebolag

In 1881 Siljans Järnvägsaktiebolag was founded. This joint-stock company built a railway line between Borlänge and Insjön , south of the Siljan. The 37-kilometer route was completed in 1884 and called the Siljansbahn .

In 1890 the railway reached the town of Rättvik through the Falun-Rättvik-Mora Järnvägsaktiebolag (FRMJ) . This route connected Falun with Mora via Grycksbo and Rättvik.

Takeover of Siljans Järnvägsaktiebolag

In 1912 the Siljans Järnvägsaktiebolag was bought by the Södra Dalarnes Järnvägsaktiebolag (SDJ). Both companies had already worked together before. The main route of the SDJ led from Krylbo to Borlänge.

The SDJ opened a new line in 1914, which connected the old Siljansbahn with Rättvik via Leksand . The route began in Knippboheden , a few kilometers south of the old endpoint, Insjön. The line between Knippboheden and Insjön was retained as a branch line. The old station was named Insjöns hamn , while a new Insjön station was built on the new line.

In 1919 the Trafikförvaltningen Göteborg – Dalarne – Gävle (GDG) was founded, in which GDJ and SDJ were included. In 1948, as part of the general nationalization of the railway, the route was taken over by the SJ .

traffic

Train station in Tällberg

The regular traffic was carried out in the form that the passenger trains ran between the terminus Borlänge and Rättvik. The trains to Mora had their starting point in Gävle or Falun and ran on the direct route via Grycksbo . This was maintained until the route was taken over by the SJ in 1948.

On May 29, 1960, passenger traffic between Falun and Repbäcken and goods traffic between Källviken and Repbäcken ceased. The connection from Falun to Rättvik was interrupted from December 1, 1965, when the line between Grycksbo and Rättvik was closed and dismantled. Since then, all trains have been running on this route between Rättvik and Borlänge, where a new freight station was opened as a freight center for Dalarna in 1965 .

At around the same time, the steam locomotives were replaced by diesel traction. The T41 series was mainly used . In the 1970s, the T45 series was also launched . Between 1967 and 1973 there was a direct connection between Stockholm and Mora, on which class Y3 railcars were used. In 1978 the line was electrified. Instead of the steel masts usually used in Sweden, the catenary was attached to tarred wooden masts.

Passenger led Tåg i Bergslagen with Regina by railcars between Borlänge and Morastrand. After that the trains were operated by Tågkompaniet . SJ still runs some InterCity trains from Stockholm via Borlänge to Mora, but most of them end in Falun. The line is part of the connection between Mora and Uppsala, known as Dalabanan since the railway lines were named by Banverket in 1990 .

In Insjöns hamn there is a connection to a sawmill. This is the headquarters and main logistical location of the major mail order and retail company Clas Ohlson AB , and there is a connection to the central warehouse. In through traffic, wood is primarily transported on the route.
