The SJ T4 series were diesel-electric locomotives produced under license by Nydqvist och Holm with construction numbers 2314-2318 for the Swedish state railways Statens Järnvägar (SJ) for the transport of passenger and freight trains.

history

Nydqvist och Holm began building diesel locomotives under license from General Motors (GM) in 1953 . The first type was the DSB MY series from Danske Statsbaner (DSB) with two driver's cabs, an American locomotive body with a GM engine and two three-axle bogies . In 1955, SJ decided to buy five locomotives of a similar model. The locomotive should, however, have one long and one short hood on each side of the center cab.

The series remained the only GM licensed series with a middle driver's position from Nydqvist och Holm. The NSB Di 3 and the locomotives delivered to SNCB, CFL and MÁV all had two driver's cabs, as did the DSB MX delivered to DSB .

technology

The locomotives received a two-stroke diesel engine of the type EMD 12-567C and four electric motors of the type ASEA LJB 84 mounted on the bogies. They had a heating system and could thus be used for passenger and freight trains. They were painted brown with white stripes throughout their service.

commitment

They were assigned to the Borås depot , which used the locomotives in passenger service on the Borås – Alvesta and Halmstad – Nässjö lines until 1962 . After the electrification of this route, they were passed on to the Siljansbana between Borlänge and Mora . Here it achieved electrification again in 1978, which resulted in the shutdown of the three locomotives T41 200 , T41 201 and T41 202 . T41 203 and T41 204 then drove in the freight train service from Östersund on the Inlandsbana . The last locomotive was taken out of service there in 1988.

Renumbering

By changing the operating numbers in the SJ numbering plan, the five locomotives were given the numbers 200 to 204 in 1956 with the same series designation .

SJ T41

By changing the series designations in the SJ numbering plan, the five locomotives were given the new series designation SJ T41 in 1964 with the same operating numbers .

Whereabouts

  • T41 200 was taken out of service after being shut down in 1979, but was placed in the strategic reserve of Banverket as a standby locomotive . In 1999 it came operational to Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum and was sold to the Museiföreningen Gefle-Dala Jernväg in the early 2000s .
  • T41 201 was taken out of service after being shut down in 1979, stood in Örebro until 1983 and was scrapped in Vislanda in 1984.
  • T41 202 was taken out of service in 1979 and placed in the strategic reserve of Banverket as a standby locomotive. In 2003 it was taken over by Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum as a spare parts donor and scrapped in 2012.
  • T41 203 came to Östersund in 1978. It was shut down in 1981 and the locomotive was scrapped in 1991.
  • T41 204 came to Östersund in 1978 and was returned to Borlänge from 1981 to 1984. Then it was used again in Östersund until it was shut down in 1988. Then it was handed over to the Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum to the Museiföreningen Gefle-Dala Jernväg, where it is operational.
