The DSB M Y (II) are diesel-electric locomotives that Danske Statsbaner ( German  Danish State Railways ) purchased from the mid-1950s to replace steam locomotives on main lines with a high axle load .

prehistory

DSB was in contact with the General Motors Group (GM) as early as the late 1940s . It was there that the state railroad became aware of the American standard locomotives of the F series from Electro-Motive Diesel (EMC), at that time a subsidiary of GM, which had been built since 1939 .

EMC's concept envisaged the coupling of several of these 108-ton locomotives into a multi-part unit in order to obtain the power required for a specific traction. The variant called A-Units was equipped with a complete driver's cab at only one end. These machines were mainly intended for freight train service. A passenger train variant appeared as an E-series from EMC as early as 1937, which had the axle arrangement (A1A) (A1A) and had two engines with a total of 2000 hp, later up to 2400 hp. In 1941 General Motors took over the EMC and Winton Company and brought both companies into the group as the Electro Motive Division (EMD). At the same time, the new EMD-567 engine was presented, which was intended to drive almost all GM EMD locomotives up to 1965.

The name NoHAB AA16 for the European license variant was named after the licensee Nydqvist och Holm AB / NOHAB in Trollhättan , Sweden , who received the license to build EMD diesel locomotives in 1949. This diesel-electric locomotive was procured by many railway administrations in Eastern and Western Europe in variants with the axle sequences Co'Co 'or (A1A) (A1A).

Nohab revised the design, the closer UIC - clearance gauge played an essential role. The roof had to be curved more than with the overseas locomotives to the now lower roof side edge. This had an impact on the position of the side windows, which were then pulled down further. This meant that the outer ends of the cab windshields had to be pulled down a little more, which gave them their distinctive, somewhat trapezoidal appearance. The typical front muzzle was inclined even more than on the American and Australian models in order to better absorb the impact forces of the side buffers common in Europe.

Procurement and technical data

Driver's cab of the MY (II) 1104 (2016)

Between 1954 and 1958 and between 1964 and 1965, 59 M Y (II) locomotives were purchased. They were used for both freight and passenger trains. Due to their axle load , they could not be used freely, as various branch lines were only approved for a low axle load.

Frichs built the middle part of the locomotive body , the frame and the bogies. From No. 1105, Thrige supplied the traction motors and Titan supplied the auxiliary generator and other parts. The diesel engine drives a generator that generates the electricity for the traction motors.

All M Y (II) locomotives had the facility for multiple control for multiple traction, which worked according to the US standard with 650 volts direct current. Individual locomotives were equipped with the ITC remote control system. The M Y 1154 and 1156 to 1159 also received control devices for push-pull trains in Copenhagen's suburban traffic.

Like all Danish locomotives and wagons, the locomotives were kept in a brown color until 1972. Then the color changed to black paint with red contrasting vehicle ends.

In numbers 1154 and 1155, the steam boiler for train heating was expanded between 1977 and 1985, in 1996 number 1154 was given the name Camilla and 1155 the name Jeanette . In the numbers 1157, 1158 and 1159, the steam boiler for train heating was removed in 1986/87 and the locomotives were equipped with a device for electrical train heating. The 1157 locomotive was named Katrine in 1996 and Britta in 1158 .

In 1994/95 the locomotives were given shunting platforms on both front sides.

After the delivery of the first row of the M Y locomotives built in Sweden , political pressure developed to develop and build a similar Danish diesel locomotive. Two prototypes of the M Y (I) series , the M Y 1201 and 1202, were built and delivered by Frichs in 1957 and 1960 . They were fitted with a Burmeister & Wain diesel engine, while Thrige-Titan manufactured the electrical equipment. However, the project was not a success, which is why the following series were supplied by NOHAB.

DSB M Y (II), 1st delivery series

The first four locomotives of the series, M Y (II) 1101-1104, were delivered in 1954. They had a top speed of 133 km / h and were built in the variant with two three-axle bogies, thus the wheel arrangement (A1A) (A1A). They were delivered with the 16-cylinder 567-B engine with 1500 hp.

DSB M Y (II), 2nd delivery series

The second series with 40 locomotives, M Y (II) 1105–1144, were handed over to DSB between 1956 and 1958. The number 1105 still had the 16-cylinder 567-B engine with 1500 hp, the series was equipped with 567-C engines with 1700 hp from road number 1106.

DSB M Y (II), 3rd delivery series

After a break of several years, DSB took over another 15 locomotives between 1964 and 1965, M Y (II) 1145–1159. This series was equipped with 567-D engines with 1950 hp.

DSB M V (II)

Six locomotives of the M Y (II) series, which were given the B engine in exchange for the 567 C engine after a repair, were classified as M V (II) in 1968 (1101, 1102, 1104, 1109 and 1134). M V 1144 followed in 1974 .

The M V (II) 1101 received their old series designation M Y (II) again in 1984, the 1104 in 1973 and the 1134 in 1981 .

Use and whereabouts

At the DSB, the locomotives were used for all types of trains, in their last years of operation even before light and medium-weight freight trains. This type of locomotive has not been used as planned by the DSB since 1992.

The Danish private railways continue to use the locomotive in freight traffic and since Railion Denmark A / S withdrew from the area, the private railways and their locomotives have been in increasing demand again. The locomotives were also sold to other European railway companies, primarily in Sweden, or given to Hungary, where they will continue to be used.

In Germany, some locomotives have changed hands more frequently: after the Eurotrac locomotives were used by the Norddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (NEG), Eichholz Verkehr und Logistik and Eichholz Eivel GmbH, they were resold to various companies.
