The DSB M Y (I) series consists of two diesel-electric locomotives that Danske Statsbaner ( German  Danish State Railways ) procured in 1957 and 1960 to replace steam locomotives on main lines with a high axle load .

prehistory

Between 1954 and 1958 and between 1964 and 1965, 59 M Y (II) locomotives were purchased from Nydqvist och Holm (NoHAB) in Sweden . The Danish company A / S Frichs built the middle part of the locomotive body , the frame and the bogies. Thrige supplied the traction motors and Titan supplied the auxiliary generator and other parts. The diesel engine drives a generator that produces electricity for the traction motors. The machines were used for both freight and passenger trains. Due to their axle load , they could not be used freely, as various branch lines were only approved for a low axle load.

After the delivery of the first series of M Y (II) locomotives built in Sweden , political pressure arose to develop and build a similar Danish diesel locomotive. In March 1954, an order was placed for the two prototypes M Y 1201 and 1202 , which were to be delivered in 1955. The technical specifications corresponded to those of the NoHAB machines.

Technical specifications

The locomotives were equipped with a Burmeister & Wain diesel engine, while A / S Titan manufactured the electric motor. The electrical control was built by Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA).

The axles were supplied with newly developed roller bearings from Svenska Kullagerfabriken (SKF). The locomotives were equipped with Hildebrandt-Knorr brakes and boilers from the US company Vapor-Clarkson, like the other M Y locomotives.

The first locomotive, M Y 1201 , was delivered almost two years later by A / S Frichs in Aarhus on March 30, 1957 , and tested in test drives in Jutland and on Funen from June 28 to July 3, 1957 .

The test drives that took place in connection with the takeover of the locomotive by DSB were very extensive. Freight trains with 1,000 tons were carried between Nyborg and Frederikshavn as well as express trains with 600 tons from Nyborg to Aarhus. The express trains reached the intended maximum speed of 120 km / h with train weights between 300 and 500 tons between Nyborg and Frederikshavn and between Frederikshavn and Aarhus.

The locomotive was driven with express trains between Aarhus and Nyborg with locomotives from the pre-series of the M Y 1101-1104 in double traction and controlled remotely from them. The 1201 covered a total distance of around 3,000 km during the test runs and was observed by a large staff of technicians and representatives of the suppliers.

The maximum achievable speed of 143 km / h was driven during a test drive. The locomotive was then handed over to operational service on July 30, 1957.

Only a short time later, the 1201 was referred to colloquially as 1201½ . The background to this was the fact that numerous parts had to be removed from the 1202 in order to operate , as they were individual pieces that had long delivery times if necessary. The second locomotive was not put into service until June 14, 1960. With regard to the external shape, the nicknames Marilyn (Monroe) and Gina (Lollobrigida) were used for the two locomotives because of the sweeping curves .

Retirement

Whether the series ever got over all of its "teething troubles" can be discussed, as it spent a very large part of its short service life in the workshop. Both locomotives were retired in 1968 and scrapped in 1971.
