history
With over 700 years of history, Nyborg is one of Denmark's oldest cities. Halfway along the old trade route between Jutland in the west and Zealand in the east, the city grew under the protection of "Nyborg", Scandinavia's oldest royal castle (around 1170).
Due to its central location in the empire and its natural harbor on the Nyborg Fjord, the city was the meeting place of the Danehof , the assembly of the Danish nobility and the highest court of the empire, between around 1250 and 1400 . In 1282 that was here Tangible by Erik V. Klipping believed the first Danish constitution. In 1413 Erik von Pomerania held the last Diet in Nyborg.
1481 the future King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden , Christian II. On the Nyborg Castle born.
During the feud of the counts (1533-1536) the castle was conquered twice and the city burned down. After the count's feud, Christian III. Fasten Nyborg. He had Nyborg Castle expanded and modernized and ordered the construction of the large ramparts that would form the Nyborg Fortress. Christian III made Nyborg the political center of the Reformation by proclaiming Martin Luther's teachings as the state religion in his empire.
During the Danish-Swedish wars , the city was occupied by Swedish troops in 1658. On November 15, 1659, Nyborg was horrified after several bombardments by the Dutch fleet under Michiel de Ruyter . From 1662 to 1668, the Dutch builder Henrik Ruse made improvements to the fortress, which Friedrich III. had ordered after the loss of strength against Sweden. This is how bastions and ramparts were created, the remains of which can still be visited today.
Like other cities, Nyborg was hit by several devastating fires, the most serious of which destroyed over half of the city in 1797. The reconstruction was only possible with help from all parts of the country. The large merchant houses with their classicist gables, which still characterize the cityscape today, date from this time.
During the Napoleonic Wars (1807-1814), Spanish troops occupied the city. In 1869 the fortification of Nyborg was abandoned. Most of the fortifications were soon demolished to make way for other projects. In 2016, a construction project was started that will partially restore the castle to its old dimensions. Continuing intensive archaeological investigations on the palace area brought many new insights into the history and the former condition of the royal palace.
With the opening of the bridge over the Great Belt , one of the longest bridge connections in Europe, the era of ferry shipping that had shaped Nyborg until then ended in 1998.
