The Vor Frue Kirke (Our Women Church / Church of Our Lady) in the Danish town of Nyborg on Funen on the west coast of the Little Belt is a Gothic pseudo-basilica of brick . It is the most important church building in the city and is used by the Danish People's Church .

Building

East gable with a small tower 1429

There is archaeological evidence of a small Romanesque previous building with brick masonry, but without its shape.

This was replaced from the west from 1375 by today's church building. According to tradition, however, Queen Margaret I should have laid the foundation stone in 1388. After completion of the small eastern bell tower on the choir gable , the church was consecrated in 1428. In the course of the late Middle Ages, a side aisle was added to the north side of the church interior along its entire length and to the three western bays of the south side. Finally, in 1581, the large west tower was built on the west gable.

The actual nave (nave) has an almost square floor plan despite being four bays . Initially, it must have had an east gable, to which an apse was connected only in continuation of the central nave . The current choir of two bays in the longitudinal direction is slightly wider than the nave and continues all the naves of the same. However, in the choir, all the vault apexes are slightly higher than in the corresponding nave of the nave. In the choir, all the yokes in the longitudinal direction of the church are somewhat larger than in the nave. In the eastern choir bay the floor is a little higher than in the rest of the church, in all three naves stairs lead across the whole width of the ship.

During the extensive renovation in 1870/1871, the outer aisles were removed on both sides, except for the two central nave bays. About the remaining outer yokes were lucarnes built so that the church since then externally - albeit unusually far west located - transept has. Inside, however, the cross arms still have the low height of the aisles.

details

A special feature of this church is the design of the vault ribs, which are otherwise made from the usual short brick segments. They start with square limestone consoles. Many of them have - in some cases grotesque - human heads carved out.
