Erik Balling
Erik Balling (born November 29, 1924 in Nyborg , Funen , Denmark , † November 19, 2005 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish screenwriter and director.
Life
Balling began studying veterinary medicine before devoting himself to film at the age of 22. At Nordisk Film A / S he got a job as an assistant director. In 1957 he became its youngest director. He held this position until 1986.
Balling was best known for his films about the Olsen Gang. He directed thirteen of the fourteen films and wrote the associated scripts with Henning Bahs . In the last film made in 1998, he was only involved as a consultant for reasons of age, as he had suffered a stroke.
Together with Henning Bahs, Erik Balling was awarded the Robert Prize for Lifetime Achievement in 1998.
He has also directed more than twenty other films. His first directorial work, Adam og Eva , received the most important Danish film award, Bodil, for best film in 1953 . He received further Bodils in 1966 for the film Slå først, Frede (German title caliber 7,65 - Thieves greetings from Copenhagen or Hau him first, Freddy ) and in 1993 for his life's work. In 1957 , his film Qivitoq was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film . and also took part in the competition at the 1957 Cannes International Film Festival . In 1962 his film Den kære familie took part in the competition at the 3rd Moscow International Film Festival .
He also worked as a television director, staging several seasons of the successful series Huset på Christianshavn (German title " Oh, these tenants! " ) And Denmark's most successful television series Matador .
In 1998 Erik Balling published his autobiography Som barn var jeg voldsomt hidsig in Aschehoug Verlag , which was also published in German in 2016 by Mosamax Verlag under the title Gedächtnisbilder: Über ein Leben, die Olsenbande and all the other beautiful films .
In his honor, the Danish Post issued a special stamp for 5.50 Kr. On August 27, 2008 ( Michel catalog Denmark No. 1430). He is still considered to be one of the most successful authors and directors in Danish film.
Since 2006, Nordisk Film has awarded a prize named after Erik Balling, the Erik Ballings Travel Scholarship.
After his death he was buried in the Gentofte cemetery , Gentofte Kirkegård .
