Martha is a 1967 Danish fiction film directed by Erik Balling and Henning Bahs and produced by Nordisk Film . Several well-known actors from the well-known Olsen Gang play in this comedy film and he is also considered a forerunner of this film series. The story is about a ship's crew who make their daily work as pleasant as possible and who experience several surprises and adventures on their voyage .

action

The good old steamship Martha is an old rust bower without comfort in a very desolate condition and does not meet the usual regulations at all, but is loved by the crew. The Martha never sails to capacity with little cargo in the Mediterranean and has already been almost forgotten by her Danish shipping company . The crew uses this time for a very comfortable and luxurious life on board. So that they can continue their lives like this and to save the ship from being scrapped, they have to put part of their wages into maintaining the ship. Your shipowner in Denmark is now trying to negotiate an important contract with an oil sheikh in order to get into the oil trade . His greatest archenemy, the Norwegian shipowner Tore Amundsen , tries to steal this oil contract from him. Afterwards, the owner of Martha pays a surprising visit to the ship. In the following episode, the crew has to prove what they're really made of. On her further voyage, the Martha meets the Harald , the ship of the Norwegian competitor. Whose ship is brand new, much bigger, and obviously a nicer ship than her own. There is a competition between the two ships and their crews, the outcome of which is to decide on the award of the lucrative oil contract and the fate of Martha . Mutual provocations between the teams, such as playing the Norwegian national anthem and a provocative striptease , are of course included. Martha's crew has to improvise a lot in order to have a chance at all against the brand new express steamer "Harald" and try to whip up their scrap-ripe ship with curious ingenuity. After a few surprising events and turbulent adventures, they finally manage to win the contract for their shipping company and save their beloved Martha from the impending scrapping.

production

The steamship Margarita (original name Aslaug ), built in Denmark in 1927, was used as Martha during the filming . After the film production was completed, the ship was scrapped in Yugoslavia in late 1967 .

Publications and aftermath

The film had its cinema premiere in Copenhagen on October 10, 1967 and was subsequently broadcast several times on public television in Denmark , Sweden and Norway . The film achieved a very high cult status there. In Sweden it was arranged by seafarers' missions, also shown especially for seafarers in small cinemas and on ships. Since the 1990s, a real cult has developed from this, where so-called Martha evenings and Martha parties are organized for seafarers and employees of companies in the shipping sector in Sweden and Denmark in various Martha clubs .

It has now been released in the original Danish version (with English, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish subtitles) on DVD and Blu-Ray . A German-language publication has not yet appeared.
