Morten Grunwald grew up as the son of the German carver Karl Frederik Grunwald (1892–1952) and his wife Hildeborg Christiane Andersen (1903–1985) in his hometown of Odense and appeared as a teenager in extras at the Odense Theater . From 1956 to 1957 he attended the drama school there and made his stage debut during a tour of the theater. From 1957 to 1960 he continued his education at the drama school of the Royal Theater in Copenhagen . After he was permanently engaged at this theater for a year, he became a freelancer in 1961.

He made his film debut in 1961. In the mid-1960s he had his breakthrough as a film actor when he was honored with Bodil as Best Actor for his leading role in Maidenstreich 1965 . In the same year he got the leading role in the agent comedy Slå først, Frede (German title caliber 7.65 - Thieves greetings from Copenhagen or Hau him first, Freddy! ) By Erik Balling and Henning Bahs , after the most famous comedian in Denmark originally intended as the leading actor , Dirch Passer , had resigned due to excessive fee claims. The film, in which Grunwald also appeared in front of the camera for the first time with Ove Sprogøe and Poul Bundgaard , was a great success and received the sequel Slap af, Frede the following year .

He became internationally known from 1968 through his role as Benny Frandsen in the Olsen Gang films. The authors Balling and Bahs, who were also the intellectual fathers of the two Frede films, developed the three main characters specifically for the three main actors Ove Sprogøe, Morten Grunwald and Poul Bundgaard. Grunwald played the role of Benny almost annually in 13 films until 1981 and again in 1998 in The (really) very last trick of the Olsen Gang .

After playing at several theaters, he was director of the Bristol Teatret from 1971 to 1980 and director of the Betty Nansen Teater (previously Allé-Scenen ) in Copenhagen from 1980 to 1992 . In 1976 he produced a production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot at Bristol Teatret , in which he played the leading roles together with his film colleagues from the Olsen Gang , Ove Sprogøe and Poul Bundgaard. From the mid-1970s he was also involved in converting a former gas works in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen into a theater, the Østre Gasværk Teater , which he also headed from 1989 to 1998 as director.

In 2000 he was seen in a commercial for Volkswagen in Germany .

In 2006 he inaugurated the Olsen Gang silhouette for the Olsen Gang Event in Thisted . In 2014 he published the book My Days in Yellow Socks , which was published by Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf Verlag . On August 15, 2015, an exhibition on the Olsen Gang opened in the Kunsthalle Rostock , where Morten Grunwald gave the opening speech in German. Also present was Lotte Dandanell who has worked as a costume at all Olsenbanden movies.

At the beginning of 2017, he announced the end of his stage career with the production of 3 × Beckett at Østre Gasværk, but was open to other film offers. From November 2017 to June 2018 he could still be seen - again with a Beckett program - in a total of 16 performances at the Volksbühne Berlin .

Morten Grunwald was married to the actress Lily Weiding (* 1924) since 1980 , with whom he had lived since 1965 and with whom he had lived in Skodsborg since 1994 . She brought two daughters into the marriage. Their daughter Tanja Grunwald (* 1968) is now a casting director after a few appearances as an actress . He leaves four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In October 2018 he had to cancel his participation in the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Olsen Gang for health reasons . A few days later he announced that he was terminally ill with lung cancer and that he had refused radiation therapy . He died on November 14, 2018 at the age of 83 in the Sankt Lukas Stiftelsen hospice in Hellerup . Originally he wanted to be buried anonymously, but at the last second decided on a real grave. The grave is right next to the grave of "Yvonne" actress Kirsten Walther , who is known from the films of the Olsen Gang , in the "Vedbæk Kirkegård" cemetery in Vedbæk on the northern edge of Copenhagen .
