The Kunsthalle Rostock was the first and only new building of an art museum in the GDR and is the largest exhibition center for contemporary art in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is located in the Schwanenteich park area in the Reutershagen district of Rostock . Works by important artists from home and abroad are presented at regular intervals. Artists from the region also have a forum in the Kunsthalle Rostock.

history

Designed by Hans Fleischhauer and Martin Halwas , the two-story museum building, clad in white artificial stone on the upper floor, was opened on May 15, 1969.

Founding director Horst Zimmermann initiated the Baltic Sea Biennale , on the occasion of which works by West German, Scandinavian and Baltic artists were shown.

The museum has an art collection of around 520 paintings, 6000 graphic sheets and 200 sculptures . The focus is on regional artists such as Otto Niemeyer-Holstein and Oskar Manigk , and the collection also includes works by Erich Gerlach , Arno Rink , Wolfgang Mattheuer , Max Uhlig and Walter Libuda . This should also be understood as part of an artistic line of tradition that goes back to the 1920s: some valuable drawings from Dresden's late Expressionism and New Objectivity are in the inventory.

In 1992/1993 the Rostock citizens cut the exhibition budget, then also the director's position and repeatedly called for the building to be closed. Since March 1st, 2009 the art gallery has been operated by the registered association pro art gallery; The chairman is the dentist Jörg-Uwe Neumann.

A red cube with illuminated writing by the architect Maik Buttler was inaugurated in front of the Kunsthalle. In 2010 the museum was extensively renovated with a roof over the inner courtyard, in which sculptures by Werner Stötzer , Sabina Grzimek , Wieland Förster and Jo Jastram , among others, are now presented. In the meantime it has been placed under monument protection.
