Erich Gerlach (painter)

Erich Gerlach (born April 9, 1909 in Dresden ; † February 1, 2000 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

In 1923 he began an apprenticeship as a lithographer and later as a pattern maker, but both broke off that same year. From 1927 he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Dresden with Paul Hermann, Georg Erler and Arthur Drescher . From 1931 onwards he worked with Otto Griebel as a graphic artist at the Hygiene Museum Dresden , in 1936 he was dismissed for political reasons. Freelance from 1937, contracted to work again as a graphic artist at the Hygiene Museum with Hermann Glöckner . He continued to work there after 1945. In 1974 he received the Art Prize of the GDR and in 1977 the National Prize .

He was buried in the cemetery in Dresden-Leubnitz.
