12-year-old James Murphy was a witness when his father and a team of cryptozoologists were killed by the latter while searching for "Nessie", the Loch Ness monster . The monster left a deep scar on his face. The monster was a plesiosaur that defended the egg found by the cryptozoologists. Thirty years later, Murphy is a cryptozoologist himself, and when he hears about the appearance of the Plesiosaurus in Lake Superior from Sean Riley , he goes in search of him. He hires Josh Riley to lead, James and Josh feel connected through their shared scientific interests and their late fathers. They discover a clutch of the dinosaur on an island. The dinosaur begins with its newly hatched offspring to devour residents of the surrounding villages, which is why Murphy goes on the hunt for the animals. James tries to convince Josh's mother, Sheriff Karen Riley, that the 60-foot-long plesiosaur kills and breeds. She thinks James is crazy at first but participates in the hunt after the remains of her brother Sean wash ashore. In the end, the plesiosaurs are all hunted down with a sniper rifle.
