Andreas Mühe (born November 26, 1979 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a German photographer and artist . His center of life is in Berlin .

Life

Andreas Mühe is the eldest son of the artistic director Annegret Hahn and the actor Ulrich Mühe . His brother Konrad (* 1982) studied fine arts at the Berlin University of the Arts and received an honorable mention from the jury at the 2011 Berlinale for his short film Questions to My Father . The actress Anna Maria Mühe is his half-sister. The actresses Jenny Gröllmann and Susanne Lothar were his stepmothers .

From the age of four, Andreas Mühe grew up in East Berlin . At the age of sixteen, he initially trained as a photo laboratory assistant in the PPS photo laboratory in Berlin, and then worked as an assistant for the Berlin / London photographer Ali Kepenek and later for Anatol Kotte in Hamburg for the next three years . Since 2001 he has been working as a freelance photographer; At the beginning, numerous portraits of celebrities, musicians, actors and artists were created for the then flourishing German magazine landscape. Through his work for magazines and newspapers, Andreas Mühe found the figure of the politician as a subject. He repeatedly portrayed Angela Merkel on her travels, but Mühe denied his reputation as a “Chancellor photographer” in interviews.

Andreas Mühe's interest in contemporary history and political issues is evident in the independent series on which he has been working alongside commissioned photography since 2004. His work Desks , which he began in 2009, is an example of his exploration of the subject of power. In this, the photographer shows the deserted work spaces of influential political figures such as Helmut Schmidt , Konrad Adenauer and Angela Merkel . For Mühe, the recording of the room - through the selected section and the lighting used - equates to a portrait of the person who lives in this room. In desks , from the architecture of the rooms down to the individual details, the influence and status of the resident becomes clear, and thus a representative function can be ascribed to these rooms, as it were a portrait.

Mühle's latest group of works, Obersalzberg , on which he has been working since 2010, can also be understood as a continuation of the theme of power and its visual representation . In a staged manner, the work deals with the aesthetics of megalomania that was inherent in all dictatorships of the past century, but which brought the Berchtesgadener Land in particular forever into connection with National Socialism.

In recent years, Andreas Mühle's photographs have been shown at a large number of exhibitions. Among other things, the well-known photographer and collector F. C. Gundlach curated the exhibition Werkschau 2 in Berlin's Camera Work in 2010. In 2011, the Rostock Kunsthalle dedicated the photographer's first solo exhibition in a museum. The exhibition was curated by Ingo Taubhorn , who also contributed a text for the extensive accompanying monograph. Furthermore, Mühe was selected to be part of the group exhibition State of the Art Photography in the Düsseldorf NRW Forum in 2012 , which, according to its own statement, presents the photo artists of the future. Andreas Mühe has been represented by the Carlier Gebauer Gallery since 2012.

Work and reception

FC Gundlach , who has been a staunch supporter of Mühes from the very beginning, once described his work as one of extraordinary consistency and thus points to the unmistakable handwriting that characterizes all of his photographic recordings. In addition to their technical quality, the motifs recorded exclusively with the large format camera often have an exciting relationship between negative empty space and actual image content. The picture surface is composed with the inclusion of spatial and architectural contexts, so that the figures that appear in it often appear small and impotent when compared in size. The impression is created that the protagonists are occupied by the space. In order to make them clearly appear, effort makes use of the targeted lighting. Like a theater spot, this gives the scenery a stage character and, although what is shown has been composed and staged by the photographer down to the smallest detail, the viewer has the voyeuristic impression of having just witnessed an intimate scene.

Because of their cool, blue colors and the resulting mood, his pictures have been compared many times with the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich . In his Obersalzberg series , Mühe repeatedly makes use of this aesthetic, but at the same time, by charging it historically and politically, to question it. With his pictures of wild peeing Nazis in front of an idyllic backdrop, Mühe confronts the viewer with the visual myth of this landscape, which was strongly influenced by National Socialist propaganda. Only at second glance is this construct symbolically broken by the act of urinating and the complexity of these motifs becomes apparent. Analogies to other works in recent art history, such as Warhol's Pissing Portraits and Wolfgang Tillman's urinating punks, have been written several times.
