Kórnik ( German Kurnik ) is a city in the Powiat Poznański of the Greater Poland Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with 28,979 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2019). In 1961, the former, older town of Bnin was incorporated into Kórnik.

Geographical location

Kórnik is located 20 kilometers southeast of Poznan in the area of ​​the Greater Poland Lake District (Pojezierze Wielkopolskie). The former Bnin occupies the south of the city of Kórnik.

Already in the 13th century there was a fortified settlement in Bnin, which received town charter around 1390. The neighboring Kórnik was only elevated to a town around 1430. Various noble families have resided in Kórnik since the 15th century, and they built and enlarged the important castle library. During the second partition of Poland , both cities fell to Prussia in 1793 . In 1870 there were 2300 inhabitants in Kórnik, in 1992 there were around 6000 in the city, which was merged in 1961. In 1939 the German Wehrmacht marched in , the city was renamed Burgstadt , the Jewish inhabitants were deported and later murdered, the Jewish cemetery and synagogue destroyed.

From 1975 to 1998 Kórnik was part of the Poznan Voivodeship .

Attractions

The historical beginnings of the castle go back to the Middle Ages, when it was owned by the Górka family, who started building their family residence in the 14th century.

  • Kórnik is known today for its neo-Gothic castle with park. It houses a museum and a well-known library. The building, originally from the 14th century, was rebuilt in the 19th century by order of the nobleman Tytus Działyński according to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The last owner Władysław Zamoyski bequeathed it to the Polish people in 1924. The castle is surrounded by an arboretum of over 40 hectares , the largest and oldest in Poland, containing over 3,000 species of trees and bushes.
