The Kórnik Castle is a neo-Gothic castle with a park in Kórnik in the Powiat Poznański in Poland . It is one of the largest tourist attractions in Greater Poland Voivodeship .

The historical beginnings of the castle go back to the Middle Ages , when it was owned by the Górka family, who started building their family residence in the 14th century. The brick castle, surrounded by a protective moat, was completed around 1430. The only access was via a lift bridge . The old walls and cellar from this period have been preserved to this day. In the 16th century the castle was rebuilt into a renaissance style castle. In 1574, King Henryk Walezy visited Kórnik Castle, who was on his way to Kraków for his coronation .

The castle experienced its next heyday when it was owned by Teofila Szołdrska-Potulicka, b. Działyńska was. She converted it into a baroque residence . In the 19th century the castle was rebuilt by order of Tytus Działyński based on a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The last owner Władysław Zamoyski bequeathed it to the Polish people in 1924 as part of the Kórnik Foundation .

today

Today the castle houses a museum with an important picture gallery . It is also the seat of the library of the Polish Academy of Sciences . It is surrounded by an arboretum of over 40 hectares , the largest and oldest in Poland.
