The Greater Poland Voivodeship ( Polish województwo wielkopolskie ) with the capital Poznań (Posen) is one of the 16  voivodeships of the Republic of Poland . It emerged in the 1999 territorial reform from the Poznan , Kalisz , Konin , Piła and Leszno voivodeships . With almost 30,000 km², it is the second largest province in the country after the Masovian Voivodeship and one of the most populous with more than 3.3 million inhabitants.

Greater Poland , together with the ancient royal cities of Poznan and Gniezno, is seen as the nucleus of Poland. The most important river is the Warta . The area of the Greater Poland Voivodeship largely corresponds to that of the former Prussian Province of Posen . However, the historical Wielkopolska covered a much larger area.
