Hellerup [ ˈhɛlˀəʀob̥ ] is a district of the Danish municipality of Gentofte and is therefore in the greater Copenhagen area . The northernmost streets of the neighboring municipality of Copenhagen belong to the Hellerup area by post.

The place is located directly on the Öresund and, along with Frederiksberg, is one of the most exclusive residential areas in the whole country.

history

In contrast to other parts of Gentofte, Hellerup did not develop out of a village. It got its name from a magistrate Johan David Heller, who bought a pleasure garden in 1748 and called it Hellerupgård.

The actual development only began in the second half of the 19th century. The Hellerup station was opened in 1863 and has also been an important S-Bahn station since 1934 . The main street of Hellerup, Strandvej, is a little further east and runs parallel to the Baltic Sea shore.

The Tuborg brewery was founded in Hellerup in 1873, but beer has not been brewed here since 1979; In the meantime, the former brewery site has been built with residential buildings and a museum, the Experimentarium. A landmark of the company that is still visible today is the striking Tuborgflasken , a 30-meter-high observation tower in the shape of a beer bottle.

During the Second World War , the Svanemølle barracks of the Danish army was used by the German security police for the execution of resistance fighters . The memorial grove in Ryvangen is a reminder of this .

Peter Høeg describes in his novel Fräulein Smilla's feeling for snow the atmosphere of the villa area with the words “Selv i mørket, selv om vinteren, ligger Hellerup i en anden dimension end København.” (German: “Even in the dark, even in winter lies Hellerup in a different dimension than Copenhagen. ")
