Railway line Fredericia – Aarhus to Aarhus

The København – Fredericia railway is a railway line in Denmark that connects Copenhagen with Fredericia in Jutland . The Copenhagen – Korsør section on Zealand is also known as Vestbanen , while the Nyborg – Fredericia section is called the fynske hovedbane in Denmark . The line is double-tracked throughout and electrified with 25 kV 50 Hz. It has four tracks between Høje-Taastrup and Roskilde.

history

Zealand

At the instigation of the industrialist Søren Hjorth and his accountant Peder Skram, the Copenhagen Industrial Association received the concession to build a railway line from Copenhagen to Roskilde in 1844 . On June 27, 1847 this line was opened as the first railway line in what is now Denmark. At that time, however, the Altona-Kiel Railway and the Elmshorn – Glückstadt and Neumünster – Flensburg railway lines already existed on the territory of the then Kingdom of Denmark .

Since the route was very short, the traffic initially did not develop as the operators expected. However, an extension of the route to Korsør was announced, which was approved in 1852. On April 27, 1856, the Roskilde – Korsør extension was put into operation.

Funen

On the island of Funen , the Nyborg - Middelfart railway was opened on September 7, 1865 by a private company . King Christian IX had already decided in advance that the railway would be opened in honor of Queen Louise on her birthday, September 7th. The route was therefore named Dronning Louises Bane . A year later the line was extended to Strib.

On September 1, 1867, the Nyborg – Strib railway was nationalized. She formed the basis of the newly founded Danish State Railways .

This left the Little Belt and the Great Belt between Copenhagen and Jutland to be crossed in order to connect the two route networks. On March 19, 1872, Denmark's first railway ferry line was opened with the Lillebelt railway ferry between Fredericia and Strib.

On December 1, 1883, the ferry connection between Nyborg and Korsør followed across the Great Belt .

Previously, the Copenhagen – Nyborg section was nationalized in 1880 and integrated into the DSB.

In 1935 the ferry connection between Fredericia and Strib was replaced by a fixed crossing of the Little Belt . For this purpose, the Lillebæltsbro was opened. Since June 1, 1997, the ferry connection across the Great Belt has also become superfluous. The Great Belt will now be crossed under and over by means of the Great Belt Railway Tunnel and Storebæltsbroen . At the same time, electrical operations between Copenhagen and Fredericia began.

Railway line Middelfart gamle – Strib

The 4.4 km long route between Middelfart gamle and Strib ( Danish Stribbanen ) was put into operation on November 1, 1866. It was two-pronged. Passenger traffic ended with the commissioning of the railway bridge over the Little Belt on May 15, 1935. From this point in time, the trains of Nordvestfyenske Jernbane (OMB for Odense – Middelfart – Bogense, Brenderupbanen ), for which the station had previously been the terminus, went to the new through station Middelfart. Then the eastern track between Middelfahrt gamle and Strib was dismantled and the connection to the port railway was relocated. The track planum was used for the construction of a road and the passenger traffic was taken over by DSB buses.

During the German occupation , the opportunity was used to replace bus traffic with passenger trains. Since the DSB had not stationed any vehicles in Middelfart, a railcar from Nordvestfyenske Jernbane was used for this. Officially, passenger traffic on the route to Strib was resumed on January 15, 1944. After the end of the occupation, the DSB took over operations with their own vehicles on October 12, 1945. On June 8, 1947, this passenger traffic ended again.

Freight traffic was carried out on the remaining track until the line was closed in 1995. The remaining tracks were dismantled by 2000 and a cycle path was built for this purpose.

Strib station was designed by the architect Niels Peder Christian Holsøe . The building burned down in 1995 and was then demolished.

business

With the opening of the Great Belt Link, all freight traffic between Germany and Scandinavia shifted from the Vogelfluglinie to the connection via Fredericia. Electric multiple units of the IR 4 series are used in long-distance transport today . Electric locomotives of the RSC EG series are mainly used in freight transport . Until December 2014, there was also a daily pair of CityNightLine night trains from Copenhagen to Amsterdam and Prague , which until November 1, 2014 also ran part of the train to Basel .

The Langeskov stop was supposed to be reopened in September 2015; the commissioning took place on October 4, 2015. The background to this is the population growth in the Langeskov area, where some industrial companies have settled. The travel time between Langeskov and Odense is nine minutes.

For the new district Carlsberg A new S-Bahn stop was on July 3, 2016 Carlsberg commissioned. The Valby S-Bahn station, just 200 meters away, was closed in autumn 2016.

The S-Bahn stop ( Vesterfælledvej from 1911 to 1923 ), which opened in 1934 in addition to the long-distance traffic stop Enghave, was closed on July 3, 2016 and will be converted into a turning facility . The long-distance service stop in Enghave was given up in 1941. In Enghave, an average of 7,000 people used the station, and around 20,000 users were expected for Carlsberg.

Wind influences

For train operations on the west bridge of Storebæltsbroen, this is equipped with two wind measuring points. These are monitored by Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut (DMI). From a measured wind force of 21 m / s on an average of ten minutes, a maximum speed of 80 km / h applies to freight trains. At 27 m / s and above, freight traffic is completely stopped, the maximum speed of 100 km / h then applies to electrically operated passenger trains, and passenger trains operated with diesel vehicles are not subject to any restrictions. All traffic is stopped from 30 m / s.

Future expansion

At the end of 2016, Danske Statsbaner set the timeline for the electrification program 2018-2026, which is based on the modernization of the signaling system. After that, all lines to be electrified will be converted to European Rail Traffic Management System 2 (ERTMS 2) between 2018 and 2021 .

Due to the test phase for the signaling system, which is undergoing a long-term test on the route between Hobro and Frederikshavn , Banedanmark has decided to postpone a number of works from 2019 to 2020. Extensive renovation work was planned for 2019 and 2020 on the Copenhagen – Fredericia railway line via Funen and Zealand. However, due to the priority of the Roskilde – Ringsted route, these were postponed to 2024/25.
