Swell:

The København – Helsingør railway line , known in Denmark as Kystbanen ( German  coastal railway ), is a Danish railway line between Copenhagen and Helsingør . It is 46 km long, two-track and electrified.

The S-Bahn to Klampenborg , which is technically not part of the Kystbane, runs parallel between Copenhagen and Klampenborg .

history

The Copenhagen Central StationKlampenborg ( Klampenborgbanen ) line was built in 1863 as a mainly tourist railway. It served the excursion destination Jægersborg Dyrehave and the amusement park Dyrehavsbakken ten kilometers north of the city. The section from Central Station to Hellerup ran inland in an arc over Nørrebro .

1863/64 was the railway line København-Hillerod-Helsingor ( Nordbanen ) built. It branches off the Klampenborg Railway at Hellerup five kilometers north of Copenhagen. The actual coastal railway was built in 1897 when the 29 kilometer long gap from Klampenborg to Snekkersten near Helsingør was closed. At the same time, the Østerport –Hellerup line was built.

The Klampenborg and Nordbane trains initially ran from Central Station via Nørrebro. Today's main train station was inaugurated in 1911. In 1917, the underground boulevard between the main train station, Nørreport station and Østerport went into operation. From 1921 the northern railway trains used this route. The track connection over Nørrebro was dismantled.

Østerport originally had the name Københavns Kystbanestation and later until 1934 Østerbro , also København Ø or Østbanegaarden ("Ostbahnhof"). The operational abbreviation is still Kk today .

Most of the railway stations on the route were designed by the architect Heinrich Wenck in the style of Scandinavian national romanticism and are part of Denmark's major railway architecture . Helsingør station, like Kronborg Castle, was built in the Dutch Renaissance style. Østerport and several intermediate stations are half-timbered buildings .

traffic

There is regular traffic with three to nine trains per hour in each direction. Three trains per hour run from Elsinore via the Central Station and Copenhagen Airport with the station Københavns Lufthavn Kastrup to Malmö C . The other trains run between Helsingør and Central Station. Some of them drive to Ringsted and Slagelse and in individual cases as Intercity to Odense and Esbjerg .

Free port line

The Copenhagen Freeport Railway branched off from Østerport and led to the Copenhagen – Malmö ferry service between November 9, 1894 and 1974. International trains from Copenhagen to Sweden and feeder trains from the main train station to the ferry ran here.

International trains

The route was of international importance until 2000, as the trains to Sweden and Norway were transferred by rail ferry between Helsingør and Helsingborg . From November 3, 1986 to June 30, 2000, freight trains were carried on the DanLink freight route between Copenhagen and Helsingborg. Freight trains from Rødby Færge to Helsingborg or to the free port formed the most important connection between the continent and Sweden as part of the Vogelfluglinie.

Since the Great Belt crossing over the Great Belt was put into operation in 1997, freight trains have been running over the Jutland line to Copenhagen and since 2000 over the Øresund Bridge to Sweden. Passenger trains from Copenhagen to Stockholm or Gothenburg have also been running over the Öresund Bridge since then.

Øresund trains

Traffic over the Öresund Bridge was operated from the opening until summer 2020 within the scope of the Danish-Swedish Øresundstog . The trains ran from Helsingør via Copenhagen Central Station and Copenhagen Airport to Malmö C and on to destinations in southern Sweden such as Gothenburg , Lund , Hässleholm , Kalmar , Kristianstad and Karlskrona .

In summer 2020, the cross-border traffic was taken over by Skånetrafik .
