Gilleleje (pronunciation: ɡ̊ilˈlɑɪ̯ ) is a Danish coastal town in the north of the island of Zealand on the Kattegat . It has around 6,500 inhabitants and belongs to the Gribskov municipality .

history

The earliest confirmed settlement at Gyldeleye (previous name) existed in the early 16th century. During an excavation in 1979, a house was found under layers of sand. The house was built around shortly after 1536.

The later philosopher Søren Kierkegaard spent recreational stays in Gilleleje as a student. In 1835 he wrote one of his most famous diary entries here, which for many marks the beginning of existential philosophy . In memory of the famous guest, a Søren Kierkegaard stone was set up on the Gilbjerg path.
