List of train stations in Sweden |
Malmö centralstation ( Malmö C for short ) is one of the largest train stations in Sweden with around 40,000 travelers every working day. It is an important hub in southern Sweden for train travelers from other parts of Europe. From Malmö C there are regular connections to Copenhagen via the Öresund Bridge , to Stockholm in the north-east and Gothenburg in the north-west. Almost 400 trains leave the station every day.
history
The station was opened in 1856 as the southern terminus of the Södra stambana . The station building was not completed until 1858.
After extensive destruction by a fire in 1866 - only the tower on the south side of the facility remained - a new station building was built by 1872 based on a design by Adolf Wilhelm Edelsvärd . In 1891, a reception building for travelers, also designed by Edelsvärd, was added. In the part of the building from 1872 there are the royal waiting rooms furnished in 1896 with paintings designed by Folke Zettervall .
The station parts of the 19th century stand as Byggnadsminne (Swedish for monument) under monument protection .
Since the opening of the City Tunnel in 2010, the station , built as a terminal station , has an underground section that connects to the remaining six terminal tracks to the north as a through station with four platform tracks.
