The Storebaelt ( dt. About: The Great Belt connection , also known as Big Belt crossing called) is about 18 km long solid links with the Great Belt between Slagelse on the Danish island of Zealand (Danish. Sjælland ) and Nyborg on Funen ( Fyn ). The København – Fredericia rail link and European route 20 run over it .

Established between 1988 and 1998, the Storebæltsforbindelsen replaced the previously existing ferry connection between Korsør on Sjælland and Nyborg.

The structures of the connection are

  • the 8,024 m long two-tube railway tunnel ( Great Belt Railway Tunnel ) between Slagelse and the artificially enlarged island of Sprogø
  • the Storebæltsbro (German: Great Belt Bridge ), a bridge train that in turn consists of
    • the eastern part between Sprogø and Sjælland with a central part as a suspension bridge with a span of 1624 m and
    • to the west of the 6,611 meter long flat bridge for road and rail traffic between Sprogø and Nyborg on Funen.

Under both bridge sections there are concrete and lighted passages for shipping, the west channel (Danish: Vesterrende ) and the east channel (Danish: Østerrende ). The west channel with a headroom of 18 m is intended for small and medium-sized sport ships, the east channel (65 m) mainly for large ships. For the use of the east channel a radiotelephone registration with the Revierzentrale Great Belt Traffic is compulsory, for the west channel it is recommended.
