Railway line Randers – Aarhus to Aarhus (from 1936)

The Randers – Aalborg railway is a railway line in Denmark that connects Randers with Aalborg in Jutland . The line is double-tracked throughout and part of the Østjyske længdebane ( German  East Jutland longitudinal railway ), which is only called Længdebane in parlance .

history

The line was created as the last part of an agreement between the Danish state and the Peto, Brassey and Betts consortium of December 18, 1860 and on the basis of the law of March 10, 1861. On this basis, a number of railway lines in Jutland and Funen were dated Consortium commissioned by the state.

Preparatory work for the 81-kilometer route began in October 1865. The chief engineer was Frederick James Rowan . The Danish state paid for the construction of the line and had spent 19.4 million Rigsdaler on it after the work was completed .

The line was inaugurated on September 18, 1869. The first train consisted of 17 carriages and 236 invited guests were in attendance, including King Christian IX. The next day, regular operations began with three trains in each direction per day.

On March 20, 1918, the decision was made to double-track the line. Work on this did not begin until 1940. The last double-track section between Stoevring and Ellidshøj was opened on May 6, 1953. As part of these expansion measures, the Annerup and Hvarre stops were closed.

traffic

Passenger traffic on the route is carried out exclusively by Danske Statsbaner .

Aalborg Nærbane

Aalborg Nærbane was opened on December 14, 2003 . For this local transport project, the already closed train stations Skalborg, Svenstrup and Støvring were made barrier-free with almost 20 million kroner and put back into operation.

Expansion plans

Between 2014 and 2016, Banedanmark closed level crossings in Svenstrup, Ellidshøj and Skørping and rebuilt the train station in Skørping. A tunnel was built to replace it in Skørping, while bridges cross the route in Svenstrup and Ellidshøj. A new platform access was built at Skørping station. These measures are part of a project to increase the maximum line speed in this area from the current 120 km / h to 160 km / h. However, the decision can only be made in 2018, as this requires a partial renewal of the track systems, new signals and further adjustments.
