Aalborg Nærbane is a local Danish railway line that connects seven train stations in the Aalborg area on the Limfjord . In contrast to an S-Bahn , the Nærbane trains run together with other local and long-distance trains as well as freight trains on the existing railway lines.

Nærbane was a transport policy decision in 1999 by the Socialdemokraterne , Det Radikalische Venstre , Socialistisk Folkeparti and Enhedslisten . The financing was regulated in this agreement. The connection was opened on December 14, 2003.

Train operation

The line uses 29 kilometers of the Frederikshavn – Aalborg railway from Lindholm in the north to Skørping in the south. There are two trains per hour from Monday to Saturday, one of which is an InterCity connection to Copenhagen , while the other Nærbane train is an MR unit. On Sundays there is only an hourly connection through the InterCity connection. This timetable design was associated with an extension of the IC travel time by a few minutes on the route between Randers and Frederikshavn.

On August 6, 2017, the North Jutland region was given responsibility for local transport by the state. As a result, Nordjyske Jernbaner took over regional train operations on the entire Frederikshavn – Aalborg railway line and on via the Aalborg Nærbane to Skørping from the Danske Statsbaner (DSB). To this end, a further 13 new Alstom LINT 41 trains were acquired, which have since served the entire Skagen – Skørping and Hjørring – Hirtshals route with the company's Desiro trains and have replaced the DSB's MR railcars.

route

The line runs the sections from today's Aalborg station to Skørping in the south and to the newly built Lindholm station. Both the stations and stops in Nørresundby , for which the Lindholm stop was built, as well as Støvring , Skalborg and Svenstrup were stops in earlier years. They were shut down in the 1970s because of the low number of passengers.

building-costs

The construction of the Nærbane cost around 125 million crowns , which was financed by the state, Aalborg Kommune and Støvring Kommune . The state took over the costs for the railway equipment and the vehicles, the municipalities financed the access roads and parking spaces. The following sums were spent on the stations: Lindholm (11 million kr.), Aalborg Vestby (21 million kr.), Skalborg (7 million kr.), Svenstrup (5 million kr.) And Støvring (7 million kr.) Kr.). Aalborg Municipality invested 15 million kr. And Støvring 5 million kr. For station reconstruction.

The investment also included the fictitious purchase of an IC3 train . Nærbane trains did not have to be procured, as the 25-year-old MR units were no longer needed elsewhere.

Effects

Nordjyllands Trafikselskab (NT) operated the bus service from Svenstrup and Støvring to Aalborg before the opening. Initial estimates before the connection went into operation assumed around 220,000 passengers who would use the train instead of the bus. Preliminary analyzes show that the largest number of passengers is covered by the existing route. However, there are proponents of extending the route to Brønderslev in the north and Arden in the south.
