Peto, Brassey and Betts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peto, Brassey and Betts , an English building consortium, built the first railway lines in Jutland .

The activities in Denmark came from Samuel Morton Peto , who made a number of proposals and initiatives for railway construction in Jutland and in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein . The economic crisis of 1866 led to the bankruptcy of his company on May 11th. Peto and his partner Edward Betts stopped payments, the company's last operations in Denmark were financed and handled by Thomas Brassey .

Construction project in Denmark

In February 1859 the company was granted the concession to build a railway line from Århus to Struer and Randers via Langå . Construction began in the fall of 1859 and the first line to Randers was opened in 1862. The foundations for the construction were changed in 1860 when the state reached a new agreement with the consortium on December 18, 1860 . After that, the state took over all the routes for which the consortium concessions owned. For this, the company received further construction contracts in Jutland and on Funen. This was decided with the Railway Act of March 10, 1861 .

The company built the following lines in Jutland:

In addition, the consortium Det danske Jernbane founded Driftsselskab , which was taken over by the state on September 1, 1867. This company transferred its activities to Jysk-Fyenske Jernbaner , the predecessor company of Danske Statsbaner .

Construction project in Schleswig

In the Duchy of Schleswig , Peto, Brassey and Betts built the connection from Flensburg to Tönning with the branch line Oster-Ohrstedt-Klosterkrug-Rendsburg , which was opened in 1859 on the basis of a concession from May 27, 1852.

On May 1, 1862, the concession for the construction and operation of the line from Flensburg via Padborg to the then German-Danish border in Farris was granted. Due to the war, parts of it were opened between 1864 and 1866.

Then there were the branch lines to Haderslev , Aabenraa and Tønder .

In 1865 the lines of the Duchy of Schleswig were sold to the Erlanger & Son consortium . These transferred the mileage to the Schleswig Railway Company , while the construction department completed the construction of the missing sections by 1869.

In 1870, the Schleswig Railway Company was taken over by the Altona-Kiel Railway Company .

Other construction projects

Peto, Brassey and Betts built gas works in Denmark next to railway lines . The consortium also received orders from all over Europe such as the construction of the railway line between Melk and Linz in Austria or America such as the Pont Victoria over the St. Lawrence River in Montreal in Canada .
