history

Friedrich Jakob Philipp Heim, founder of Paulinenpflege

The founding of the Paulinenpflege Winnenden goes back to the year 1823. The initiator was Pastor Friedrich Jakob Philipp Heim , who became a deacon in Winnenden in 1821 . At that time, due to the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars and devastating crop failures, there was great need in Württemberg . The population grew steadily, while only a certain proportion of young people found a livelihood in agriculture and the craft trades . Many children had to help themselves out by begging and stealing, as there was no social help and the coffers of the poor foundations were empty.

With the support of King Wilhelm I and his wife Queen Pauline , Deacon Heim was able to open the educational institution for neglected children on August 6, 1823, thereby making a contribution to the rescue house movement of the time. The main concern of the educational institution was the schooling of young people. Supplementary lessons in household, manual and agricultural activities should enable young people to earn their own income in the future . By 1827 the number of children cared for had grown to 79, two of whom were blind and 21 were deaf .

Another concern was the support of young people who could not find a job. A straw hat industrial establishment, which was also supported by King Wilhelm I, was supposed to help. Deacon Heim took over the supervision.

Increasing health problems caused Heim, who was meanwhile the first pastor in Winnenden, to move away to take over the more relaxing management of the Tuttlingen deanery .

Pastor Heim's work continues to this day. Among the staff there are well-known educators such as Emma Kretschmer , who initially worked with deaf and dumb children from 1917 to 1929 and then took over the management of a home for school-age children in the Paulinenpflege.

time of the nationalsocialism

On March 10, 1941, seven people from the Paulinenpflege were brought to Hadamar in Hesse as part of Nazi racial hygiene and murdered there. Since May 2014, eight stumbling blocks in front of the Paulinenpflege headquarters have been remembering her.

Current care structure

The three fields of activity that Pastor Heim established can also be found in the current structure.

Vocational training for people with hearing and speech impairments

As early as 1824, one year after Paulinenpflege was founded, the first deaf children were in the care of Pastor Heim. Even today, the care and vocational training of hearing and speech impaired people is a central area in the work of Paulinenpflege.

In the vocational training center , which opened in 1985, young people can be trained in one of over 30 professions, both in the practical and in the vocational school area. A vocational preparation year and the so-called vocational school level form supplementary measures for the weaker students.

The school on the Way of St. James opens up further educational opportunities for young people with hearing and speech impairments. The vocational schools for social and geriatric care , as well as vocational colleges for health and technology, enable paths to a professional qualification or advanced technical college entrance qualification . The six-year vocational high school enables students with and without a handicap to graduate from high school.

Youth welfare association and soil forest school

This area provides young people and children in problematic school or family situations with various support options.

In the Bodenwaldschule, the children from the housing offers of the youth welfare association, as well as external students who could not cope with the public school system, are taught. Services for municipalities in the areas of youth work, social group work and social training courses for young people who have committed offenses complete the offer.

Housing offers and workshops for disabled people

Depending on the degree of independence, there are different housing options for people with disabilities, from assisted outpatient living to group living.

The Backnang workshops, which were founded in 1977 and have since been expanded to include several external locations, form the counterpart to the residential part of the care offer. They offer around 500 places in a wide variety of work areas. The Paulinenhof has a special position here. The farm offers 21 people with disabilities living and working space. The company's own products are sold in the associated farm shop .
