Railway line Fredericia – Flensburg to Padborg

The Fredericia – Aarhus railway is a railway line in Denmark that connects Aarhus with Fredericia in Jutland . The line is double-tracked throughout and part of the Østjyske længdebane ( German  East Jutland longitudinal railway ), which is only called Længdebane in parlance .

history

The railway line was inaugurated on October 4, 1868. It connected the Fredericia – Flensburg railway via Vamdrup and Varris , which has been coming from the south since 1866 , the railway ferry to Strib , which opened on March 19, 1872, and the Randers – Aarhus railway via Langå , which opened from the north in 1862 .

The line was the penultimate line that Peto, Brassey and Betts built on behalf of the Danish government. The route was set on December 18, 1860 with the consortium and approved by the Railway Act of March 10, 1861 . The alignment was not yet included in the agreement. By the Railway Act of January 19, 1863 the route Fredericia - Vejle - Horsens - Fuldbro Mølle - Stilling - Aarhus was determined. A change in the route was decided after the German-Danish War of 1864. This change was made in the Railway Act of 22. Established May 1866 . As a result, the route between Horsens and Aarhus led via Skanderborg .

The line was expanded to two tracks between 1916 and 1929. On April 24, 1931, as part of the preparations for the construction of the new station in Fredericia, with which the terminal station was replaced by a through station, the line between Fredericia and Bredstrup was moved north.

Another modernization took place between 1967 and 1975 when several stations were converted to remote control. Between 1973 and 1975 a section of the route south of Horsens was straightened to allow higher speeds.

With a framework agreement, Danske Statsbaner decided to electrify the line from 1995 to 1998. At the same time, the sections from Eriknauer to Horsens and from Horsens to Skanderborg were to be straightened. This agreement was enshrined in the Railway Act of May 20, 1997 (Act No. 342). In November 1999 the project was stopped because new calculations did not evaluate electrification as profitable. After this decision, DSB was able to procure new diesel multiple units of the DSB MG series , which later became known as the IC4 . In addition, there was local opposition to these expansion plans. The agreement was repealed by Law No. 496 of June 7, 2001 .

For a further straightening of the route over the Stilling-Solbjerg Sø , soil surveys were carried out in April 2016 in preparation for the construction of a new, low bridge on a planned western route, where the lake is narrowest and the lake floor is only 10 to 15 meters deep.

New line

With the Railway Act of June 25, 2014 (Annex 2 of the Act), the Danish Folketing commissioned the Ministry of Transport to plan and design a new route across the Vejle Fjord , including an assessment of its impact on the environment. The aim is to bypass Vejle station and increase the maximum speed in this section.

In addition, the route between Hovedgård and Hasselager is to be straightened in order to increase the maximum speed (Appendix 3 of the Act).

Horsens Harbor Railway

Horsens Harbor Railway: Remnants of track in Sønderbrogade

A 900 meter long port railway ran from Horsens station to the harbor. In the port there were a total of 2.3 kilometers of port tracks. Before the port railway was officially closed in 2005, the sidings had not been used for several years. The track bed is still there and the rails are still on most of the route sections.

Vejle port railway

With the construction of the railway line, the port of Vejle was connected to the route network. Coming from the south, the route of the port railway turns east in front of the station. Before reaching the harbor basin, the route divides and connects to numerous industrial companies and a tank farm on the north and south quays.

traffic

Local train traffic on the Fredericia – Aarhus route began in 1971, with some of the stations being closed. In 1974, with the introduction of the InterCity trains, the Hedensted and Hovedgård stations were closed. With the introduction of the Regionaltog in 1979 from Fredericia via Herning to Struer , Pjedsted was closed. In the section between Aarhus and Skanderborg, further stations have been closed. Hørning, Viby J and Hedensted were later reopened.

Arriva and DSB have been serving the Aarhus – Skanderborg route since January 2003, while the Skanderborg – Fredericia section is only operated by DSB .

According to a tender by Transport-, Bygnings- og Boligministeriet ( German  Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing ) for the implementation of regional transport in Denmark by private providers, the award of the train services between Aarhus and Skanderborg is to be stipulated by contract for eight years from December 2020 .
