The Vejle – Holstebro ( Danish Vejle-Holstebro-banen ) railway is a Danish single-track railway line that runs from Vejle via Brande and Herning to Holstebro . The line is called the skrå bane ( German for  the inclined railway ) because, like the partially disused Diagonalbane or the skæve bane ( German for  the crooked train ), the Langå – Bramming railway runs across Jutland .

history

The line was built in several sections.

Vejle – Give railway line

The Vejle – Give section was built by the private railway company Vejle-Give Jernbaneselskab (VGJ) between Vejle and Give . Commissioning took place on August 2, 1894.

Give – Herning railway line

There was no direct connection from Fredericia to Holstebro and Struer. This was either via the Langå – Struer railway line or via Esbjerg and Vestjyske længdebane .

Therefore a diagonal route through the center of Jutland to Holstebro was proposed by a railway commission in 1899. This should come from a state railway from Give to Holstebro and the taken over private railway line Vejle – Give. The bill was tabled in 1900, but the Reichstag only approved the route between Holstebro and Herning in the Railway Act of April 27, 1900 . This route was inaugurated on October 11, 1904.

Herning – Holstebro railway line

The third section, Herning – Holstebro, was approved by the Railway Act of May 27, 1908 . This law included both the line from Herning to Give and the takeover of the private railway to Vejle in one overall concept. The line between Herning and Holstebro was opened on January 1, 1914.

In connection with the construction of the railway between Herning and Holstebro, the Danish state acquired the property rights of the VGJ on April 1, 1912. On October 1, 1914, Danske Statsbaner took over the operation of the former private railway as part of the entire Vejle – Holstebro line.

The former route of the VGJ was upgraded to the state railway standard. The end of the line, which up to this point was in Vejle Nord, was relocated to Vejle State Railway Station.

Expansion of the route

The construction of the line created major problems in Vejle in the city center, as the trains had to cross the busy Havnegade . In 1919, at least a footbridge over the railway line helped. However, a solution did not come until 1933, when the line was led through the city on a viaduct as an elevated railway. The space under the elevated railway was used as a parking space and after the turn of the millennium by the homeless as a quarter. After the renovation in 2013, the city built a shelter for the homeless there in 2014.

The route received new safety systems in 1969/70, these were modernized in 1980/81, with Automatic Train Control (ATC) being installed.

Some of the stations that are no longer used for passenger transport are still required for operational purposes:

  • Grejsdal, passenger traffic ceased in 1970, remote-controlled junction station
  • Gadbjerg, converted into a stop in 1969, passenger traffic ceased in 1979, remote-controlled junction station
  • Thyregod, converted into a stop in 1973, remote controlled junction station
  • Fasterholt, converted into a stop in 1973, passenger traffic ceased in 1979, remote-controlled junction station
  • Kølkær, converted into a stop in 1972, passenger traffic ceased in 1979, remote-controlled junction station
  • Gødstrup station was closed in 1969. With the construction of the new hospital with around 4,000 employees, a new stop was built.
  • Skibbild, converted into a stop in 1973, passenger traffic stopped in 1971, remote-controlled junction station
  • Troelstrup, Haltpunkt, closed in the 1950s
  • Aulum, converted into a stop in 1973, remote-controlled junction station
  • Tvis, converted into a stop in 1971, passenger traffic ceased in 1979, remote-controlled junction station

traffic

The route is served by Danske Statsbaner with regional and intercity trains.

According to a tender by Transport-, Bygnings- og Boligministeriet ( German  Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing ) for the implementation of regional transport in Denmark by private providers, half-hour train services between Herning and Holstebro are to be carried out from December 2020.
